Deborah Acosta's Projects

  • Crossing Hispaniola

This short documentary focuses on the issues faced by Haitian migrant women living in the Dominican Republic. Many Haitians cross the island of Hispaniola to the neighboring country with the hope of finding a better life. As migrants they become a particularly vulnerable population that is often discriminated, exploited and whose human rights are violated. The documentary is part of the multimedia participatory workshop made possible by the Knight Center for International Media.

Crossing Hispaniola was featured in the Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival, The United Nations Association Film Festival, the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival, WAMM (Women And Minorities in Media Festival), and the Social Media Film Festival. The documentary won 13th place in LinkTV's ViewChange Online Film Contest.
