Dean Nelson’s Summary

In my professional career I have been driven by one question - What's next? I love to solve complex problems and take on challenging projects. I live, eat and breath technology and push myself to come up with new ways to not only apply them, but push them further. I also believe strongly in simplification. There are always different ways to look at challenges and innovate. Being a very visual person with a knack to see patterns, I can connect the dots allowing me to build strategies. I lead by example and surround myself with talented, passionate, dedicated people who are as motivated as I am to solving the next problem.

Over the last five years I have focused on solving the internal Data Center challenges for Sun Microsystems. My team simplified data center design by creating a modular, scalable approach called the POD architecture. It allows us to rapidly adapt to business changes and maintain brutal efficiencies in the datacenter. I've managed $250M in projects, including two of the largest and most complex datacenter consolidations in Sun's hisotry. These efforts compressed Sun's global datacenter portfolio by 41%, decreased the operating expenses in the bay area by 30%, and beating Sun's GHG reduction goals five years in advance. This success spurred 5,000+ customer tours of our datacenters in CA & CO, influenced DC design and strategy for many of Sun elite accounts, and sparked the new Data Center Efficiency service practice based on my teams innovations and best practices.

I feel that the range of positions I have held in my 20 year career have enabled me to be a well rounded executive who is able to see the opportunity, create the strategy and tell the story that resonates with customers and the industry. Sun is now positioned as the thought leader in Data Center Design.
