David Gratton’s Experience

  • CEO

    Project Opus

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Music industry)

    March 2006Present (2 years 5 months)

Founder and CEO of Project Opus. We are a company focused on developing new music technologies in order to foster viable economies for recorded music consumption. Presently we are working on MPEG 21 technologies that are intended to revitalize the demand by consumers for music purchases, in light of the massive collapse of music CD sales.

  • CEO

    Donat Group Enterprises

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; E-Learning industry)

    May 2002Present (6 years 3 months)

Donat Group is a web developer focused on social networking and shared learning applications.

We are engaged in developing multiple projects for MTV and other branded Virtual Worlds (MMOs), as well as professional networks for industry associations like New Media BC, and Nanomed Canada

  • President

    ici Media Inc

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Online Media industry)

    November 1999May 2002 (2 years 7 months)

This was our digital media company. This company did some of the most innovative interactive video work on the Net. We had a team of eight who drank beer laughed and did cool stuff for Disney, Fox Interactive, BMW Films, PBS.org, Greenpeace, Apple, and a number of others.

Company pseudo-merged (long story) with Totally Hip Software and was blown apart. Oh well.... live and (boy did I) learn....

  • Vice President

    Totally Hip Software

(Public Company; 1-10 employees; thw; Computer Software industry)

    August 2001May 2002 (10 months)

Software company that made the best (still is) interactive video authoring tools on the planet. Joined when they purchased (but then didn't close) my company, ici Media Inc. During my brief stay we vastly improved the core product's UI (LiveStage Professional), and increased over all sales to close to 100%.

  • dealer

    royal bank of canada

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; rbc; Capital Markets industry)

    19901999 (9 years)

Repeating this one incase people are searching for Royal Bank rather than RBCDS

Great company to work for. I loved my time at RBC and these guys treated me so well. Worked in London, Singapore, Calgary and Toronto. Another life, though. It wasn't my calling. Loved the people, the company, but I was destined for something else. My own company!

  • dealer

    rbcds

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; RBC; Capital Markets industry)

    19901999 (9 years)

Currency Options Dealer: Exotic Options Dealer: Option Sales Guy.

  • dealer

    Bayerische Vereinsbank

(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Capital Markets industry)

    January 1995June 1996 (1 year 6 months)

I interupted my time at RBC with 2 years at BV. I lived in Munich. Great city, and wonderful people. Although I didn't gel with the German management structure too well, unfortunately. Too top-down for my personality. I was eventuallyy sent to Singapore to open the currency options trading desk for our new trading unit.

I would like to think I got this wonderful promotion and opportunity, because I was well trusted and respected by the bank's management, but I think they may have just been trying to get me out of Munich!

  • Broker

    Tulletts

(Privately Held; 501-1000 employees; Capital Markets industry)

    August 1989February 1990 (7 months)

Tullets and Tokyo Forex brokers! This was my apprenticeship in foreign exchange. Got phones thrown at me. Deliverd Pizzas. Called some of the most vile names imaginable. Picked up laundry. Took clients out and drank every night. Somehow learned something about foreign exhange brokerage. Started night desk with some guy named Mike. Made more bro than most of the day brokers, and then got my ass out of there to join RBC.

This is the reason why I never became a chef, as I had planned when I turned 30. I learned the apprenticeship was very similar (vile) to that of forex trading, and I knew I was too old and I was too experienced with this kind of working environment to just shut up and take it. So... when I finally left banking (10 years later) I pursued a career in my other love: technology!
