I consider myself a "Chief Quality Officer" - and if you're in the field, you should too. You are the CQO of your own efforts - whether you're a entry-level tester or a senior manager, you need to handle yourself as such. As Tom Peters puts it, you're the head of your own PSF (Professional Services Firm) and should approach your job with the intention of making your client(employer) damn glad that you're on the payroll. See more of my ramblings on www.chiefqualityofficer.com.
I've tested for 12 years and demanded more of myself every year. I've written more test plans than I prefer to count and tested relentlessly more than I wish I had to (hence the desire to influence preventing bugs). I've studied and earned my CSTE. I've taught and helped other QA professionals gain their CSTE credits.
I've tested at behemoth Fortune 20 companies. I've tested at little places you've never heard of. I've traveled on short notice to harried customers to help them fix their problems. I've juggled the phones, managing customer support for multiple products. I've been the technical liaison, the technical writer, the guy who trained the post-sales support people. I've broken in the new hires and brought in the bagels on Fridays.
But most of all, I've connected with people. Found out what made 'em tick, found out how to work well with them and get a good job done in the face of steep odds and working conditions best described as the bleeding edge of insanity. Because QA isn't just about testing. It's about working together with a team of people who care about doing a great job not to toe the company line but because they love what they do - or at least they love pushing themselves to be their best.
I think I've typed enough ... I'm not out to try and impress you. I love giving 200% and immersing myself in an environment where people do the same. If that's where you are, be sure to love every minute of it and perhaps we'll cross paths soon.
I am an influencer/communicator/creative solution-finder/standard-raiser. I listen. I help groups become less adversarial and work together more. I love to be convinced that there is a better way than the way I suggest because that means I just learned something. I have weak & unreliable superpowers. I'm not afraid to have a sense of humor. It keeps people engaged/comfortable/receptive, & hey, it's kept you reading this far. If that's floating your boat, give me a call & we'll connect.
