I've been involved in online community and community publishing since the days of dial-up BBS's in the mid 1980s. But I really got my feet wet at Washingtonpost.com, where I was one of their first online producers. I helped launch their first web message boards and launched its first business and technology sections.
I later joined America Online and spent 6+ years working on mostly web-based community products. I had key content & product leadership roles for AOL Groups, Hometown (personal home pages, pre-blog) and "You've Got Pictures," among others.
I've spent the last 4 years at The Bakersfield Californian newspaper, where we've applied the concepts of user publishing and social networking at a local level. The Northwest Voice (first U.S. newspaper citizen journalism initiative in 2004) and Bakotopia.com (one of the first newspaper-run social networks) are our two most well-known initiatives, but we've done much of the same on the core newspaper site Bakersfield.com and a total of 11 locally-focused community brands, all of which are awash in social media activity. Learn more about them at http://participata.com/casestudies.html
I'm spending the next two years on a project called Printcasting, one of 16 winners of the 2008 Knight News Challenge (see newschallenge.org). We're building tools that will let anyone create a self-updating, printable PDF newspaper, magazine or newsletter using content from RSS feeds and local self-serve advertising. We will market the tools in Bakersfield, then reprint and locally distribute the best publications with our own advertising. Our theory is that this will be a more scalable way to grow local revenue around niche interests in print, a medium that local advertisers prefer but can't always afford. In the last phase we will sign up organizations in 5 other cities to do the same. For more info, see http://printcasting.com

Conceived of the Printcasting concept, secured a Knight News Challenge grant, assembled the team to make it happen, and managed it to launch. I now focus on product management, business and development, partner relations, public relations, marketing and all the TLC a new business needs to get off the ground.
