Daniel Kovach's Projects

  • Renown Healing Garden

    • April 2007 to February 2008
Team Members: Daniel Kovach, Rick Desouza, HDR Inc.

CFA worked with the Renown Regional Medical Center Facilities Department, the Renown Foundation, a community volunteer advisory board, and HDR Architecture on the Healing Garden. The garden is located near the center of the campus adjacent to the north side of Tower 1 and is challenged with access limitations and extensive existing utilities below grade. While included in previous construction documents for the campus, the design was revised to incorporate sculpture and additional seating opportunities. The design included coordination of grading, paving and walks, lighting, and planting. The Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects selected this project for a 2009 Merit Award.

  • Nellis SABER Accessibility Community Park, RKMF 11-0163

    • January 2012 to October 2012
    Team Members: Daniel Kovach

This project included the design of a new Accessible Community Park for use by military dependent families. The park provides an accessible environment for natural and unstructured play elements of the emerging green schoolyard movement. Creating educational opportunities through the use of loose materials and self expression has been found to improve in academic results and behavior in children. Park structures are constructed with synthetic lumber and other low maintenance materials. Both natural and structured bench seating are provided in the different small group areas. Boulders natural to the region are used to provide access control in an aesthetically pleasing manner, as well as providing additional seating elements.
A challenge of the site is very poor soil conditions for plant growth with high salt and boron levels to the point of plant toxicity. The landscape design included mitigation measures to create good growing conditions. Plant materials were selected for adaptability of thriving growth in the very arid environment of the site.
