Web designer, developer, and consultant with extensive experience installing and customizing Open Source web-based software, primarily Content Managment Systems and social media tailored to clients' needs.
I can help individuals, small businesses, and non-governmental organizations that want full control over their own web presence or less technically involved hosted solutions. I can advise clients on hosting providers and packages, including green hosting.
Related services: search engine optimization (SEO), research, training for effective use of software systems, writing, editing, media/constituent relations.
I am especially interested in projects that contribute to and take advantage of the emerging hyperlocal web for practical complements to daily and public life as traditional print-bound newspaper journalism dies. E.g., placeblogging and social media/social publishing and small business/local commerce can be mutually supportive, and citizen journalism can help monitor the public record, bring it into the public interest, and contribute to the shaping of public discourse.

My own area of study was early modern Europe, specifically British literature of the medieval and Renaissance/Reformation periods. I also took special courses in history and historical theology outside my department and in seminars at UW-Madison, Penn State and the Newberry Library. Most of these other courses were geared toward or allowed me to concentrate on bibliography, textual scholarship, micro-history, material and cultural history, the development of and shift from manuscript to print culture, the history of the book, the history and psycho-social impact of literacy and reading.
MA, English, 1995 — 1998
Continued medieval and renaissance study focus for MA coursework, thesis. NCSU's ample SparcStation's and networked PC/MAC labs motivated me to start messing with UNIX and HTML.
