I have in-depth experience in computer systems development, with a triple (and sometimes paradoxical) focus on human-computer interaction, object-oriented and relational database systems and applications, and middleware development. I have led the development of a number of successful commercial applications, components, and tools, including ODBC and JDBC drivers, object-oriented libraries for ODBC and XML, automated technical support data capture systems, and boutique object-oriented database management systems for the HVAC and automotive industries.
Most of my jobs and projects over the years have centered around the exchange of information between computer systems with heterogeneous hardware and software platforms and programming languages. I use a human-centered or user-centered analysis and design approach, having learned through long and painful experience that 90% of the barriers to successful IT projects are political and cultural rather than technical in nature.
I have been developing Web applications since the mid 1990's, and have written and spoken on the subjects of software architecture, markup languages, and the future of information technology. I have mastered numerous computer languages, including COBOL, assembler, C, C++, Visual Basic, Perl, Java/J2EE, and most recently Python. In recent years I have become an expert in regulatory compliance in the healthcare and clinical research domains (HIPAA and human subjects protection), and also in the sociotechnical issues involved in information technology deployment and adoption. I have also developed expertise in working with biomedical standards, including HL7, SNOMED, UMLS, LOINC, and others.
I recently earned a Master's degree in information science from the University of Michigan School of Information, which has ignited an interest in social network analysis and visualization.
I am currently focusing on distributed system architectures in the healthcare and biomedical research domains. Other skills and interests include strategic planning, regulatory compliance, information security, distributed systems and parallel processing, the design of database management systems and communications protocols, and standards-based, regulatory-compliant interprocess communication between disparate systems.
