I was 1 of 4 students who investigated a suspected wrongful conviction case from the early 1990s involving Chicago gang violence. While working on this case, I traveled to low-income neighborhoods on the South Side and Gary, Ind., and also various state prisons to interview often reluctant sources. I also researched criminal and civil records at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on 26th and California and the Daley Center and attended relevant court hearings.

I was 1 of 20 students to participate in a New York Times Student Journalism Institute in which I posted content to the web, produced daily stories on deadline (as well as took my own photos), and produced an in-depth story for a site and 14-page newspaper over 10 days.
