Co-founder, coordinator and program manager for the OLPC (One Laptop per Child) Learning Club DC. The Learning Club is an all-volunteer grassroots group that has been meeting monthly since November 2007 to support local users of the XO laptop. The club enjoys direct support and recognition from the One Laptop per Child Foundation and has over 150 members. The club has begun developing educational software for the laptop and has spun off Sugar Labs DC to focus on that track of work.
Program Management integrates major organization-wide program and infrastructure initiatives with web operations. This team also handles business operations responsibilities for the web operations unit.
I directed the Client Services group of the team that operates the AARP.org public web site. The Client Services team of three managers and 15 content producers interacted with 60 internal business units and stakeholders, 81 product providers, 53 regional offices and a myriad of external partners to produce a unified content presentation on the association's web site. The Client Services team also held responsibility for AARP's e-mail newsletter delivery platform, web metrics and discussion board moderation.
Hired as a contractor for a period of six months to supervise a team of nine designers and production coders responsible for the visual design and information architecture of the AARP.org web site.
Originally hired as a consultant to assist with information architecture and usability testing, the engagement was extended well into the following year. I ended up turning down a fulltime job offer because I didn't want to relocate to NYC from Baltimore, so I recruited an IA from Razorfish who helped build the user expereicne department that I satrted to the group of five that it is today.
e.magination is a Baltimore-based web development firm with clients primarily in the mid-Altanltic region. During my years there, I started the company's information architecture and usability practice, working alone with the support of contractors for many years. I successfully applied my information architecture process to major projects including a redesign of the National Education Association's web site, a teacher portal managed by Maryland Public Television and JHU called Thinkport, and a redesign of AIG.com among many other projects. I was mentored by Lou Rosenfeld and active in the information architecture professional community.
The Maryland Institute College of Art is a private art college in Baltimore, Maryland. I taught both undergraduate and continuing studies courses there in graphic design and and web development. My undergraduate courses ran two nights a week for 14 weeks on topics ranging from graphic production, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Dreamweaver. My continuing studies classes for adults typically ran for 2 - 4 Saturday sessions on topics such as HTML, Web Multimedia and Macromedia Dreamweaver. I also ran a special 4 week seminar for undergraduate design majors on user interface design for mobile devices.
