A life defining moment for me was in Sep. '97 flying home from a 2-week business trip to Puerto Rico. On the 2nd day of that trip my daughter learned how to walk and I wouldn't see her for another 11 days. On the flight back to Chicago, I was incredibly blessed to sit next to Rose, a mid-70's woman, who was on her way back from a cruise. As Rose heard about my daughter, she gave me some between-the-eyes, life changing advice I will never forget. She told me the worst part of her life, looking back, were the regrets she has, and that if I did just 3 things well, I'd be able to get to her age with no regrets someday, but if I ignored her I'd have many...
...Rose said, "Craig do these three things: (1) Take the time to form strong relationships with other people and make a difference in their lives, starting with those closest to you - your family. Always remember, your little girl doesn't spell 'LOVE' like we do as adults, she spells it 'TIME' and just wants you there, in her life, so be there. Quality-time is a delusion. (2) Pursue YOUR dreams, whatever they are. Get clarity on them and go for it, because it appears you're chasing your company's deams right now. (3) Never let fear stop you, in either of the above. Fear is crippling and is at the root of all real regrets, and remember, they are the worst part of life."
I immediately started making changes, but it took me a few years to fully appreciate the impact that plane ride would have on my life and I am eternally grateful to Rose for being there for me.
Life is far too short, so take advantage of the little time you have left and do something you are truly passionate about. There are no do-overs, so go for it! Don't look back with regrets, they are the worst part of life.
