Colleen Wainwright’s Summary

Are you not on the web but want to be?

Are you on the web but not happy with the way you look there? Or sound there?

While we're at it, are you happy with the way you're communicating who you are to the world? Do you love handing out your business card? Sending people to your website?

If you're really, really great at what you do and really, really passionate about doing it but not firing on all pistons, let's talk.

Chances are, I can help you refine your message. Translate that idea in your head into a business identity, or a website, or a kickass presentation.

And if I can't, I can probably direct you to someone who can. That's the nice thing about being the communicatrix—you meet the most interesting people...

Colleen Wainwright’s Specialties:

Branding & identity design, presentation design, marketing, performance, writing.

Colleen Wainwright’s Experience

  • the communicatrix

    communicatrix (Sole Proprietorship)

(Sole Proprietorship; Myself Only; Writing and Editing industry)

    October 2006Present (1 year 10 months)

I am your Sherpa on the odyssey of self-discovery, there to hand you a Larabar when you're hungry & a hearty laugh when your metaphoric toes are losing sensation from frostbite.

I am your trusted filter, weeding out the detritus of modern life so that you can get to the good stuff that much faster.

I am your buddy, your clown and, when I'm "on", your Fool. In the Shakespearian sense. (Hint: think wisdom coming at you sideways, not dumbass eating paste.)

For more on what I do, and how I go about doing it, please visit the links above.

I've officially been "the communicatrix" since 11/04, with the launch of my eponymous (well, eponymous in terms of the handle) blog. And I've been farting around in various communications disciplines since about 1962, when word has it I actually started using words. LinkedIn's system of ordering by date (rules! rules! cursed, lowest-common-denominator-driven rules!) forces me to futz with start date in order to get this info bubbling up on top.

    The Marketing Mix

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Marketing and Advertising industry)

    September 2006Present (1 year 11 months)

I launched and maintain this business blog for Marketing Mentor principals Ilise Benun and Peleg Top. Designed to serve the community created by their consulting business, the Marketing Mix also provides tips and insight on self-promotion, marketing and management to the small business community, posting 3 - 5x weekly.

  • columnist

    LAcasting.com

(Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Entertainment industry)

    September 2006Present (1 year 11 months)

Now unofficially retired from acting (my agent prefers the term "extended hiatus," which is one of the reasons he's my agent), I'm putting my hard-won knowledge to good use helping the little chickens starting out. If they make only 9/10ths of the mistakes I made, they will be ahead of the game.

  • communicatrix

    communicatrix | designs

(Privately Held; Myself Only; Graphic Design industry)

    March 1999Present (9 years 5 months)

I create marketing materials for entrepreneurs and people who think like them.

Usually I'm hired to do websites, branding & identity, collateral and presentation design. I also do some copywriting and consulting work for a select few clients.

  • writer

    Metroblogging (blogging.la)

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Online Media industry)

    November 2004February 2007 (2 years 4 months)

  • commercial actress

you name it, I've shilled it

    (Marketing and Advertising industry)

    September 1998September 2006 (8 years 1 month)

Yes, that's right—I was one of the mythic 5% of Screen Actors Guild members who actually supported themselves with acting. There were a few TV shows and films in there (and a whole lot of unpaid theater work), but in the main, I played the goofy housewife, the funny friend, the whack-job business gal in :30 wind sprints for roughly 8 years.

  • graphic designer

    Evidence Room

(Non-Profit; 11-50 employees; Performing Arts industry)

    March 1999January 2006 (6 years 11 months)

As designer of record for this highly-regarded small theater in Los Angeles, I created graphic standards, oversaw the creation of the company's original website, personally designed and maintained the 2.0 version and designed the company's marketing materials for 4-5 productions/year.

  • TV writer

    ABC-TV

    (Public Company; Entertainment industry)

    November 1992November 1993 (1 year 1 month)

    Co-wrote "Rhythm & Jam," an Emmy™-nominated children's edutainment program for ABC-TV.

  • VP, Creative Director

    Bayer Bess Vanderwarker

(Public Company; 51-200 employees; Marketing and Advertising industry)

    19881992 (4 years)

Wrote copy and/or attended to creative development on advertising for a variety of consumer goods & services, including Gatorade, Suave, and Federated Dept. Stores' MainStreet.

  • copywriter

    DDB Needham Chicago

(Public Company; Marketing and Advertising industry)

    19861988 (2 years)

Wrote copy for a boatload of things, high point being a Michelob Light commercial starring my childhood idol, Madeline Kahn.

  • copywriter

    Y&R New York

(Public Company; Marketing and Advertising industry)

    19831986 (3 years)

Where I cut my teeth in MarComm...

Patti Austin sang in my poolouts for Lincoln-Mercury, I got written up as a "wunderkind" in Adweek...heady, heady times.
