Reputation for delivering timely results and innovative analysis with the highest level of professional integrity. Exceptionally strong numerical modeling background, including experience with both econometrics and numerical optimization. Intermediate Mandarin speaking, reading, and writing.
In addition to work in economics and numerical modeling, my work has included extensive software engineering and architecture, database management (DBA), and systems administration experience with large-scale Unix and Linux deployments as well as management of IT teams and software product development.
Notable Achievements:
- A top-performing economist at Lexecon (now Compass-Lexecon)
- Quickly promoted at The Active Network to lead the engineering team through incredibly rapid growth
- Awarded the highest honor conferred on foreign experts by Yunnan Province
- Maintained a flourishing independent software engineering consulting practice through the worst of the dot-com bust
Years of Experience:
- 4 years experience managing teams of research analysts and software engineers
- 8 years experience in numerical optimization, econometrics, and algorithm design
- 9 years software engineering and architecture experience
1) Economic analysis and numerical modeling in support of finance and M&A matters.
2) Software engineering and architecture.
3) Management of teams of research analysts and software engineers as well as technical and research projects.
(Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Higher Education industry)
September 2006 — Present (1 year 11 months)
Taught international economics and business coursework. Transitional position that afforded the time and opportunity to learn intermediate-level Mandarin. Awarded the Yunnan Color Cloud Award, the highest honor given to foreign experts in Yunnan Province, for my efforts at Yunnan University.
(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)
May 2006 — July 2006 (3 months)
With a few months of free time between Lexecon and China, I assisted a former colleague with software engineering and architecture for a nascent high-tech startup. Trackvia provides SaaS (software-as-a-service) database tools for SMBs.
(Note: See recommendation by Trackvia Chair and CTO Matt McAdams, former CTO of The Active Network, among the Active Network recommendations below.)
(Public Company; 51-200 employees; Management Consulting industry)
April 2004 — March 2006 (2 years)
Provided economics consulting services for finance and M&A matters. Prominent matters included economic analysis for Enron litigation, market timing, and AT&T / SBC and Verizon / MCI mergers. Managed and coordinated research staff in support of studies. Numerical modeling performed primarily in SAS.
After two successful years at Lexecon, where I was a top-billing Economist, I took an academic position at Yunnan University in China to fulfill a longstanding goal of spending a year living and working abroad.

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Information Technology and Services industry)
May 2001 — May 2003 (2 years 1 month)
Maintained a flourishing independent consulting practice (despite the dot-com bust) while completing my dissertation. Absolute Performance was my primary client throughout.
Consulting work consisted of design and implementation of systems and application performance tuning, monitoring, and optimization software for enterprise scale Unix, Linux, and Windows deployments. All systems were designed as fully configurable high-availability client-server applications with robust logic and failsafe mechanisms.
(Privately Held; 501-1000 employees; Computer Software industry)
March 2000 — April 2001 (1 year 2 months)
Managed a team of application developers while concurrently generating application architecture and architectural standards and serving as lead engineer for the Active-Leagues application environment. Managed a variety of concurrent software and systems engineering efforts based on an iterative, component-based development process. Projects included design and implementation of sophisticated multi-tier application services and MySQL to Oracle integration and migration. Developed and maintained web applications and scheduling algorithms.
Resigned from my position at The Active Network as the company consolidated operations in California in order to complete my dissertation.
(Privately Held; 501-1000 employees; Computer Software industry)
August 1999 — March 2000 (8 months)
Performed OOA and optimization of existing object architecture and OOD of data structures and class libraries. Created algorithms for league scheduling problems. Created various and sundry web applications using a combination of Perl, Java, and JavaScript.
(Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Higher Education industry)
September 1996 — August 1999 (3 years)
Designed and implemented preprocessors and other software tools for numerical modeling. Numerical work performed primarily in GAMS, Matlab, and Perl.
Ph.D., Economics, 1996 — 2004
Research included extensive experience with numerical optimization using GAMS and MPSGE for CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) modeling and general applications of nonlinear optimization methods, such as GMM estimation, as well as general software engineering in support of modeling applications.
Teaching experience included the generation of econometrics problem sets for graduate students and introductory mathematical methods for economists at the undergraduate level.
Field work included Industrial Organization and Natural Resources economics.
MA, Economics, 1996 — 1998
While enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado, a Master's degree was awarded upon successful completion of second-year comprehensive examinations.
BA, Mathematics, 1994 — 1996
To support myself financially while obtaining my mathematics degree, I worked a number of interesting jobs included editing of physics and astrophysics journal submissions, original research to generate estimates of embodied energy in a variety of architectural design models using hybrid input-output modeling techniques, and software engineering of a virtual workbench for optoelectronic engineering students.
