I love teaching, and that's driven a lot of what I do.
I've taught half a dozen introductory-level college physics courses, covering just about every topic in the discpline. I've done labs and lectures, both my own material and that provided by the school. I've also assisted with over a dozen courses, including modern physics and physics-oriented writing courses.
Right now I'm teaching mid-level mathematics at NMH (Northfield Mt. Hermon School) in Massachusetts. I went to Northfield Mt. Hermon myself, and NMH made a big positive impact on my life. I really like using my expertise and research experience to help students appreciate and learn more about the world around them.
I chose to do physics education research because I wanted to apply something I needed to do (research) to something I wanted to do (teaching). I've been chest-deep in statical methods of data analysis, including Principal Component Analysis. My thesis is on categorizing student behavior on online homework, and what sorts of effects different behaviors have on later performance. I was surprised when I started that so little reserach had been done in this area, and I'm glad to be able to lead the way on this.
I also teach karate at J.R. Roy's Martial Arts in Greenfield. I've been practicing karate for fourteen years, and have been teaching for about a year now. My black belt project was on improving our self-defense program. Our school focuses on cooperation rather than competition, and its excellent safety record really shows the benefits of that.
Not all my life is teaching: I design and publish role-playing games, I read fiction (mostly sci-fi and fantasy), and I enjoy cooking. I've been deeply involved with broadcast media, working at WRPI in Troy NY as the president, business manager, station manager, and more at various times.
I'm also working on creating a school of my own. It's a long-term goal - it's going to take ten years or more - but I really believe it's worth doing.
