  • Interim Manager Library Information Department

    PricewaterhouseCoopers

    (Computer Software industry)

    19961998 (2 years )

  • Manager IT Department

    Koninklijke Bibliotheek

    (Non-Profit; 201-500 employees; Libraries industry)

    November 1989August 1991 (1 year 10 months)

As a natural follow-up in my career at the Dutch National Library, I became manager of its IT department under Michel Wesseling and Johan Steenbakkers. I managed the PC support team, the local network and system administration team, and the team dealing with the library automation systems. Together we maintained several servers (NT and Unix-based), VAX-VMS mini systems and hundreds of PCs and workstations.

  • Application Manager Library Automation

    Koninklijke Bibliotheek

    (Non-Profit; 51-200 employees; Libraries industry)

    September 1988November 1989 (1 year 3 months)

I first operated the hardware equipment at the Dutch National Library (PDP 11/44, PDP 11/70, Minivax, etc), then moved on to daily system administration for both the financial automation (Unix) and the library automation system (custom operating system ZIS). I set up daily maintenance procedures for new team members.

Another aspect of my job was to work with managers of the various library departments and see to it that the automation system delivered the functionality and reports that they required. I designed forms, filed bug reports with the library automation company (PICA) and helped to build a support team for the end users within these departments.

  • IT Support Specialist

    Koninklijke Bibliotheek

    (Non-Profit; 201-500 employees; Libraries industry)

    November 1987September 1988 (11 months)

I helped to build up the IT department of the Dutch National Library in The Hague, rolling out PC equipment, workstations and software on a large scale (hundreds of PCs and thin clients). I organized training sessions and set up the technical support division.

  • Book Cataloguer

    Koninklijke Bibliotheek

    (Non-Profit; 201-500 employees; Libraries industry)

    December 1980November 1987 (7 years )

My assignments at the National Library (Koninklijke Bibliotheek) in The Hague shifted from being a generic multi-lingual book cataloguer in my early years to more specialized, temporary projects: I was involved in very early automation projects, such as

    - OCLC bulk retro-cataloguing, creating the largest global bibliographic database

    - ABHB (Annual Bibliography of the History of Printed Book)

    - Occasional Poetry (= Gelegenheidsgedichten)

    - Dutch Royal Library Disc, containing medieval illuminated manuscripts (= Beeldplaat)
