Open Source Voting software that produces a paper ballot, so that both the paper and the electronic records can be audited. Electronic voting is essential for some disabled voters. It reliably prevents overvoting and spoiled ballots, and greatly reduces undervoting, but by itself it is inherently insecure and unauditable. Commercial voting system vendors have a dismal record, producing shoddy software and continually violating election laws.

Encore Technologies, based in Singapore, is one of two manufacturers of the Simputer, the first commercial computer product specifically designed for poor people. My assignment was to explain to the public how this would work, and to promote the Simputer to US computer companies. Although I had some success in bringing the Simputer to their attention, and some companies had publicly stated goals and programs that would have fit, I ultimately failed to convince any of them that this would be a profitable venture.

Write, edit, manage, produce ready for printing a specialist magazine on the APL programming language and its applications. When I started, there were no PostScript APL fonts, so I had to paste daisy-wheel output into pages typeset from Pagemaker files. The appearance of usable fonts and better tools occasioned a number of articles on the subject, including a little of the story of non-Latin fonts and typography in general, and of Unicode. Now, if one has the font, one can just type ⍎X←'⍎X' (a recursive expression useful for testing the quality of APL interpreters, and winning entry in one of Stan Kelly-Bootle's programming contests).
