Chase Gray's Summary

During my last two years at school, I focused on my goal of having my own software company. I started Ratchet Software LLC when I was 23 years old and just ending my undergraduate degree.

Ratchet Software has become a successful, profitable, and growing business serving data through web applications to companies with 25K+ employees. The primary public product that we provide is a unified interface to all of our data sets developed in Ruby on Rails.

The company bases much of its income on multi-year contract so it is clear that the next several years will be stable for the company as it expands its customer base and the information provided.

In the future I hope to spend some of the freedom I have through my company on outside projects that I find interesting and having a possible impact.

Chase Gray's Experience

Owner and Lead Developer

Ratchet Software LLC

Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry

January 2008Present (4 years 5 months)

I am the founder of Ratchet Software LLC. The company specializes in aggregating hard to access healthcare data into a single source and provides simple unified interfaces to access that data. The public application is located at http://www.myhealthcaresource.com

We do all of our data processing and web applications in Ruby and Rails.

I am the Co-Owner and am responsible for day to day running of the company as well as major development tasks. I also obtain and parse new data sets to increase the quality of our database of healthcare financial data.

The company was bootstrapped and has been profitable from the first few months. After the first year we had much more data and many offers for custom interfaces to our public data as well as extra analysis per the client's request. We now have large ($100K+) multi-year contracts for custom data and a growing number of standard users on the public facing site http://www.myhealthcaresource.com

In the future we hope to increase the data we offer and potentially move into the more competitive market of hospital data.

Research Assistant

University of South Carolina

Educational Institution; 10,001+ employees; Higher Education industry

June 2005August 2010 (5 years 3 months)

► Involved in the development of resilient routing schemes at the ARENA for Research on Emerging Networks and Applications.

► Contributed to the implementation of Failure Inferencing based Fast Rerouting (FIFR) for IP backbone networks. FIFR performs local rerouting and provides protection against any single failures without global link state updates while adhering to destination-based forwarding.

► Proposed an algorithm for identifying the minimal set of FIFR-aware nodes to protect a given link/node to facilitate incremental deployment of FIFR. Presented at USC Discovery Day 2006 and to be published in USC Undergraduate Research Journal.

► Programmed with NesC in the TinyOS environment to develop applications on our Tmote sensors. Mentored a visiting undergraduate researcher while he studied the effect of modifying the clear channel assessment threshold on the total throughput of a sensor network test bed.

► Designed a protocol, Covert Neighborhood Transmissions (CoNTra), for a pair of nodes to resist traffic analysis without a network-wide anonymity protocol. we Integrated our CoNTra protocol into the existing Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) implementation in ns2 network simulator using C++. This project required thorough knowledge of the network stack, Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), and ns2. The work was presented at ACM MobiCom 2007 and has been published in Mobile Computer Communications Review.

► Developed a rate selection algorithm for opportunistic routing in wireless mesh networks. Wrote evaluation framework to test our path metric on the Roofnet topology from MIT. Used Ruby to develop simulations to analyze the rate changes happening during the 90-second trace data. Published at the WiMesh 2008 conference at Secon 2008.

Teaching Assistant

University of South Carolina

Educational Institution; 10,001+ employees; Higher Education industry

January 2007May 2009 (2 years 5 months)

► Taught 30-student class as sole instructor on data structures and algorithms with Java.

► Responsible for implementing and testing new teaching styles focusing on pair programming.

► Organize and teach a weekly lab on data structures in Java in which students are lead through new concepts with hands on programming.

► Provided assistance for students while they learned and worked with XHTML/JavaScript.

► Successfully passed an NSA special background investigation and polygraph. Resulted in clearance to work with TOP SECRET/Sensitive Compartmented Information.

► Primarily responsible for conducting research and developing prototype tools for computer network exploitation. Took a project from initial ideas and goals to a demonstrable prototype that is to be used as the basis for a new effort in a new agency division.

► Awarded NSA Star Award

Contract Develoepr

Self Employed (Self-employed)

December 2006April 2007 (5 months)
