Chief architect

For 3 years, I have been working as chief architect for Albumprinter. In Europe, Albumprinter is one of the largest providers of services to create personalized photo books. The company prints over a million books a year, mainly for large retailers and its own brand Albelli.
• My responsibilities were the architecture vision, strategy, innovation and business development.
• The functional areas were the internet presence, consumer software, storage facility, order platform and plant automation.
• As part of the IT management team, I worked with about 30 developers and architects, including an outsourced team in Delhi, India - using a distributed SCRUM approach.
The unprecedented growth of 22,000% in five years led to several honors. In 2008, Albumprinter was the winner of the Deloitte Fast 50 for fastest growing technology companies in The Netherlands. The company also took a grand second place in the Deloitte EMEA Fast 500 that year.
Such scalability requires innovative technology. In 2007, we were launching customer for Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) in Europe. Shortly after that, we released early Adobe AIR based software in partnerships with Photobucket and others. Lately, we have been using Amazon EC2, SQS and Cloudfront to create and distribute OpenSocial widgets. -

As a consultant, I serviced several international companies. I dealt with architectures, technical management and strategy. Customers were Akzo Nobel, UMC, Hogeschool Utrecht, HKZ, Albumprinter, Evident Interactive and more.
For example, Akzo Nobel hired me to lead the redesign of their worldwide internet platform - based on a service oriented architecture using Flex, Microsoft Content Management Server and BizTalk Server. Its first website (akzonobel.com itself) received the Macromedia Site of the Day award in October 2005.
In November 2005, the Akzo Nobel internet platform architecture was competing in the Dutch National ICT Architecture Championships. Unfortunately, we didn't win. However, the jury called the architecture very clear, used the phrase "the Internet Platform is state-of-the-art" and also praised the methodology description.
Other stuff: during my Centrical time, I wrote over 40 publications - mostly Dutch content for Infoworld - and presented at international KCUK and European Networking Group conferences. -

For this Microsoft specialist I participated in projects for customers like Akzo Nobel, KPN Hi, DTZ Zadelhoff, Ballast Nedam, VNU Exhibitions Europe, Sanoma Publishers and more. Tasks were presales evangelism, application design and technical management.
An application for VNU won the Europrix award in 2004 (design with Marc Rietveld). -

In the years 2000-2001, I worked as technical project manager for this internet application development company. I was responsible for functional design, architectures and technical management. Projects included web applications for Elsevier Business Publications, Falk Courier, NRC, AKN and more.
The company collapsed along with the first Internet bubble in mid-2001. -
Geophysicist

In an early attempt to do something commercial with the internet, this little venture was built around the result of our thesis.
In order to prevent multiple visits to an exploration site, a web application was developed around an inversion algorithm for the processing of electro-magnetic field data. Using the internet, the application could be accessed at the remote location, thereby allowing for better targeting of the research goal.
The results were presented at the EEGS conference in Budapest, Hungary (1999).
We tried to market the application under the name Geophysics.nl, but we couldn't really make it a commercial succes. Eventually, the faculty of Earth Sciences of Utrecht University continued the development of the software - using it for scientific research only.

During my university years, I participated in several international projects, for example in China (3D modeling using GPS/E/EM, in cooperation with DLO Wageningen and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Beijing) and France (tracing Roman remains using M/E/EM/GPR/GPS, with RAAP Amsterdam, the Sorbonne University of Paris en the Patras University of Greece).
