I am based in San Francisco (formerly London) as a freelance journalist and writer, specialising in media, technology, culture and travel. My work is published in The Guardian, The Independent, The Australian, Rough Guides and several consumer and business magazines.
I started my career at a local newspaper in Sydney in the late 1990s, became a technology journalist through the years of the dotcom boom and bust, and spent several years on the general news desk of The Australian newspaper, the national broadsheet and a sister paper to The Times of London.
My work varies from in-depth analysis of topics such as genetically modified crops or race hate on the internet to fun and frothy coverage of events such as the Armani fashion show and launch of RED in London in 2006. I have travelled overseas on assignment, producing reportage of issues such as the lives of subsistence coffee farmers in Uganda and also interviewing celebrities such as African musician Youssou N'Dour.
On the business side, I specialise in media and technology and particularly the new media space where the two intersect. I been both a reporter and news editor for weekly business magazine Media Week and also reported for Campaign and the media and technology sections of The Australian, The Guardian and The Independent.
I also produce travel and lifestyle features for a consumer audience. I write on a wide range of topics from music to sport but I focus on travel and food. I have published travel articles on destinations such as Cappadocia in Turkey, Shanghai in China, Spitsbergen in the High Arctic, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
I have also lived and worked overseas. I was an exchange student in Germany in high school and I worked as a volunteer on community development projects in Costa Rica and Guyana in my early twenties. I hold a Master in International Studies from the University of Sydney.
