I am currently seeking a new full-time job. Since I took on so many responsibilities at once in my previous job, I'm able to target positions both inside and out of the recruiting industry.
At Minera / Indy Associates, I recruited for some of the best asset managers and investment banks in the world. I specialized in the companies I worked with, not the positions I recruited for -- so I handled everyone: junior traders, senior portfolio managers, desk quants, quantitative researchers, macroeconomic advisers, developers, operations specialists, investor relations representatives, and fundamental analysts.
In my spare time, I invest. I try to find overlooked value (small- to micro-cap stocks with great assets and decent cash flow) and cheap call options on radical change. See byrneseyeview.com for details.
I also work part-time as an intern with a web design and online marketing firm (bluefountainmedia.com) where I contribute to their online marketing efforts and write a blog on tax and personal finance issues.
I'm also working on finishing my degree.
Recruiting, hedge funds, investment research
(Marketing and Advertising industry)
August 2008 — Present (3 months)
The company does web design and online marketing; I'm on the marketing side, generating content that drives traffic towards particular web properties. I'm learning a great deal about what goes into an online marketing campaign.
(Self-Employed; Myself Only; Financial Services industry)
June 2003 — Present (5 years 5 months)
I assist individuals in considering various investments, generally adhering to a traditional value investing framework, with significant attention paid to undervalued and misunderstood business franchises and competitive advantages. Substantially profitable investments include Industrias Bachoco, Nasdaq, and Fossil. Focus on concentrated portfolios (3-10 positions).
(Staffing and Recruiting industry)
January 2007 — October 2008 (1 year 10 months)
Recruiting firm focusing on quantitative and IT positions at leading investment banks, hedge funds, and financial software firms. We match extraordinary people to extraordinary opportunities.
I handled all stages of the recruiting process: I wrote ads, contacted candidates, cold-called potential clients, wrote cover letters, and scheduled interviews. In addition, following the Indy Associates acquisition of Minera in August 2008, I performed research and wrote content for several iPhone games currently in development.
(Government Agency; Higher Education industry)
October 2005 — March 2006 (6 months)
Wrote muckracking reports about local and international businesses' environmental record; did basic phone-answering and organization; introduced office to the 'wiki' structure of information organization; helped compile massive dossier/whitepaper on a major new grant to the university.
(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Financial Services industry)
January 2003 — May 2005 (2 years 5 months)
Did miscellaneous analysis of macro-data; read annual reports/proxy statements on incredible array of businesses to paint thumbnail portraits of management's shareholder-friendliness; learned the basics of value investing, from understanding a business' competitive position to dissecting balance sheets and cash flow statements in order to build a valuation model.
(Privately Held; Wholesale industry)
May 2002 — August 2002 (4 months)
Answered phones, recorded shipment data, handled correspondence.
