Brian Henderson is creative director of Brimmage Communications, a visual media and creative strategy company based in Washington D.C.
Brian started his newspaper career as a designer at the Arizona Daily Star and most recently worked as a news design editor for two years at The Baltimore Sun. His work as a designer won him awards from The Society of News Design in 2008, The Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia Press Club in 2007, and The Arizona Press Club in 2006.
During the 2006-2007 school year, Brian worked as an adjunct professor at The University of Maryland, where he taught introduction to newspaper graphics and design. In 2006, he taught visual communications at the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, located in Nashville, and has been a guest speaker at McDaniel College, Grambling State University and The National Association of Black Journalists convention.
A mass communications graduate of Grambling State University, Brian also attended graduate school at Ohio University, where he studied visual communications. As a student, Brian interned at People Magazine, the Gannett News Service and The Washington Post. He was apart of the first ever New York Times Journalism Institute in 2003 and Time Magazine Journalism Institute in 2001. While on his campus paper, he served as Editor-in-chief, Graphics Editor, and Photo Editor.
Brian's commitment to diversity in journalism began when he was a student. He worked as a designer, photographer and graphic artist on the National Association of Black Journalists' student newspaper project in 2001-2003 and for the American Society of Newspaper Editors student project in 2001. Brian has given his skills, talent and encouragement to aspiring journalists as a professional volunteer on The Monitor for three conventions. In addition, Brian was a consultant in developing the first ever student project for the Black College Communications Association annual convention.
