Trainee Software Engineer at IBM

Still an ungrad (for the next 5 weeks), I consider my experience to be quite broad. I have run my own business for 3 and a half years, developing web based applications of varying complexity from simple CMS implementations (Joomla, Wordpress) to a complex custom billing software built in Java and a number of projects in between.
On top of this I have worked for 18 months as an intern at IBM. I started off as a technical support engineer with the Rational Brand of development tools and moved into a test analyst role, working on IBM WebSphere Portal Web Content Management.

I took up freelancing under my own name after winding up Den Solutions. The majority of this work has been contracting to a particular company, creating valid XHTML and CSS based wireframes to integrate into their CMS, for their offshore developers to further develop. I have developed 2 wireframes so far in this partnership that plugged into their CMS, and were both valid XHTML and CSS at the time of delivery to the offshore developers.
As well as this, I am building 2 iPhone applications and a number of web based applications for launch early next year.

This role is within the test team for IBM WebSphere Portal Web Content Management. Originally in this team I worked with Rational Functional Tester writing automation test scripts (honing my XML skills) and doing manual testing. From there I moved to the team that manages the infrastructure of the laboratory. As well as spending some days in and out of bash terminals – the focus of our small team is automating the processes and tasks we carry out, and developing accurate reporting on the infrastructure.
We write a number of bash scripts every day, but my role has been more in web based tools development. The first part of this is a dashboard built in PHP/MySQL with a java client installed on each server. It uses JQuery (with a sprinkling of plugins) to enhance the interface. Some of the javascript-based features I have implemented include: inline filtering of data, modal popup boxes and inline editing of dynamic data. The site is XHTML Transitional valid, apart from 1 mandatory parameter of the JQuery Thickbox plugin that causes errors.
The second tool developed here is much more lightweight. The properties selector is basically just an intuitive interface to a few database tables. It dynamically loads stored properties from the database upon entering a servername in the text box. This application is also valid XHTML, except for the JQuery Thickbox plugin parameters required in the markup. This tool was developed to streamline a process where users formerly had to download a text file, edit it, then upload it back to an ftp server.
The third tool I developed here is an RSS 2.0 framework, written in java. This framework has been added to the numerous bash scripts that are run during the day in the lab to provide a real-time RSS feed of the progress of the different scripts.
