My primary interest is in helping individual inventors, start-up companies, and small companies with their intellectual property needs.
Frequently, intellectual property is the primary asset of value for a start-up company. At the very least, it is certainly something carefully considered by investors. Yet, many who start companies do not clearly understand what intellectual property rights are important, how they are acquired and protected, and what they may cost.
At Shell Oil I served as Assistant General Counsel for Intellectual Property at Shell Oil Company, responsible for all intellectual property law issues in Shell. My work including significant involvement in alternative energy technologies. Prior to becoming Chief IP Counsel, I served Shell in various other capacities, including Manager of Process Licensing, Patent Group [Polymers] Manager, and Research Engineer working in petroleum refining (catalytic cracking and reforming).
I have taught courses on Technology Licensing, Trade Secret Law and Patent Law as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston College of Law, which is consistently ranked one of the top intellectual property programs in the US. I have also held a number of distinguished posts in the intellectual property law community, including Intellectual Property Law Section Chair of the State Bar of Texas.
My experience includes chemical and biochemical processes – alternative energy technology, biofuels, coal processing, petroleum refining, etc., as well as mechanical devices. For those things that I cannot efficiently handle I have numerous contacts that can be accessed.
