Entrepreneurial Strategy and Execution
Kansas City, Missouri Area
For over 25 years, I have created and operated highly successful technology and life science companies and commercialized intellectual property (IP), creating world-wide impact over a broad range of critical growth industries and technologies. I am eager to put my experience to work for you.
I’ve broadened my extensive innovation and engineering skills with: comprehensive technology/life science business plan development; technology/business strategic planning; large and multi-disciplinary program, product, and project management; international standards development; knowledge management; technical, competitive, and market research; international projects; operations; business development; and cultural/language familiarity with French, Dutch/Flemish, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese.
(Privately Held; Medical Devices industry)
2008 — 2009 (1 year )
Work focused entirely on the business strategy and development of the company in its entirety, encompassing: exhaustive and comprehensive business plan development; applications to investment forums and SBIR opportunities (esp. NIH); presentations to local, industry, angel, VC, and corporate financing sources; marketing; communications; and all business operation logistics.
The goal of Osseo Imaging is to truly revolutionize both the orthopedic medicine and dental imaging markets through the introduction of novel imaging device solutions based on "true" "to-scale" 3-D Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA).
(Privately Held; Computer Software industry)
2006 — 2008 (2 years )
My main task in the Advanced Products Group was to augment Digital Asset Management (DAM) functionality in Perceptive Software's document imaging and workflow management software. This new functionality would permit management and workflow processing of Rich Media file formats such as large-format images, videos, audio recordings, voicemails, and complex documents.
My secondary task was to completely define and prioritize an Information Organization and Access (IOA) strategy that encompasses organization, access, data and informational structures, and related technologies. Key areas included search and browse user experience (UX) optimization, taxonomies, metadata, content analytics, information presentation, and both information access performance and security.
I was the 6th employee ever profiled in the quarterly customer magazine from over 550 employees at that time. Please see page 23 of 24 in the Spring 2008 issue located at:

(Management Consulting industry)
2003 — 2006 (3 years )
Notable work included: technology strategy in both consumer electronics and a law enforcement/military DVR; intellectual property commercialization for Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC); technical due diligence for VC and angel investors; and competitive intelligence/business plan development for three entrepreneurs in the fields of robotics, residential electrical energy efficiency, and eCommerce container port security.
(Public Company; IT; Information Technology and Services industry)
1999 — 2002 (3 years )
European-based partner of ECA leading to the formation of sister companies Solista Global and Intellocity. Emerging consulting work with Solista significantly contributed to the acquisition of the company by Gartner. Intellocity, a developer of interactive TV applications, was acquired by ACTV and then ultimately by OpenTV.
Helped expand Gartner's emerging technology research and consulting services throughout Europe, including several projects for investment banks, VCs, entrepreneurial companies, and very large company CEO/CTOs. Co-developed the Gartner "Emerging Technology Relevance Scope" process. Won an innovation award from the Gartner Innovation Council.
Led "triple-play" digital set-top box architecture, planning, and interactive services program management for a major European telecommunications corporation with properties in seventeen countries; new product and services from this work have increased revenue to the company by 30%.
Co-founded and served as the only American on a pan-European industry board with over €2B of purchase authority.
(Non-Profit; 51-200 employees; Telecommunications industry)
1997 — 1999 (2 years )
Co-founded, architected, and implemented the cable modem world standard (DOCSIS), managing over 60 vendors and 1000 engineers in lock-step as specified by industry CTOs, resulting in expansion of world-wide cable industry revenues by at least 25%.
(Public Company; CACS; Telecommunications industry)
1996 — 1997 (1 year )
Analyzed competitive intelligence, disruptive technologies, standards, and trends to create a revolutionary product that was exclusively OEMed to ADC Telecom. This new direction and momentum contributed to a second product line which increased visibility with analysts, greatly impacting a successful IPO.
(Public Company; EMC; Information Technology and Services industry)
1994 — 1996 (2 years )
Led new product definition for McDATA Corporation, creating business cases for feature additions leading to innovative changes to the most profitable product of the most profitable division in the history of IBM (ESCON/Fibre Channel Director). My efforts contributed significantly and directly to EMC's acquisition of the company in 1995.
(Non-Profit; Telecommunications industry)
1992 — 1994 (2 years )
Co-led Network World Magazines Strategic Test Alliance for testing ATM access and network switches, developed major funding sources, updated UPS/DC power for major equipment upgrades, and both planned and installed a Siemens SMDS/Frame Relay system, and a Nortel DMS 250 central office upgrade among many other accomplishments.
Additionally, planned, organized, and completely facilitated two International Communications Associations Summer Lab conferences, many Deloitte & Touche telecom/IT training sessions, the AT&T Summer on Campus program, and the US Department of States Telecommunications Training Institute--a strategic telecom planning and management seminar for international cabinet-level appointees.
(Government Agency; 1001-5000 employees; Government Relations industry)
1988 — 1991 (3 years )
Independently designed and constructed laser power measurement system for national standards calibration purposes. President Reagan cancelled SDI funding source, but work remains relevant to very high power lasers.
(Government Relations industry)
1987 — 1988 (1 year )
Helped create patented pattern recognition and beam steering technologies used in 1991 Gulf War smart bombs, optical computing, and all-optical telecommunications systems; these technologies remain central to important products still in use today.
Also as side-line activities: helped attract SBIR Phase I and II funding to develop a holographic thickness measuring system used by Coca-Cola, Ball Aerospace, and others to minimize aluminum thickness while increasing the strength; developed a laser intrusion detector systems for Disney amusement park and museum applications; and researched automated optical docking systems for NASA.

1985 — 1986 (1 year )
Work centered on the strategy and programming of an artificially intelligent (AI) expert system for a Boeing-Vertol-Sihkorsky advanced rotocraft using the Knowledge Engineering Environment (KEE). The purpose was to eliminate the need for and weight of a co-pilot by enhancing avionics intrumentation sensor fusion with significant human flight and scenario expertise embedded in software. While the consortium lost the DoD bid, aspects of this work was utilized in other Boeing aircraft.
