Have you ever reached out to a Realtor, via Web or phone, only to hear crickets chirping?
After 19 years of learning every nook and niche of Alexandria, VA, here are some tips I've found helpful when finding the right agent for you:
1. GUIDANCE. In this area, a lot of people only see dollar signs. Trust your gut - Can you rest assured that your best interest is your Realtor's driving priority? Will they ultimately help you make the right decisions? Are they advocating for you?
2. REFERRALS. How well does the agent know your desired neighborhood? Can they provide references from other clients in that area? Are they involved in the community as well and have that 'insider information'? Honestly, do you like the person?
3. COMMUNICATION. Don't let the early "WOW" factor fool you. Ask whether you'll be dealing more with an assistant once the wheels start rolling. It's disheartening to be wooed in the beginning and then passed off as a secondary priority. Also, make sure the agent is aware of your preferred communication methods (phone, email, fax, in-person).
4. NEGOTIATING SKILLS. All of the above efforts will be in vain if your agent can't "get to yes" for you at zero hour. Make sure you know their negotiation style and how you'll be represented to the other party. Negotiating is an art, too, so make sure you get a "Picasso." ;)
