Presently training on usage of SCCM 2012 and Server 2012 by Microsoft at this location and project.
MDT 2010 Enterprise Migration, error log analysis, active directory consulting–
Paid consulting with a US government agency and a private commercial client simultaneously to improve, document, analyze the deployment of Windows 7 using MDT 2010. Windows 8 is being deployed to a commercial client using MDT 2012. The major issues involve interpretation and resolution of the error codes and MDT logs for the client as well as Active Directory concerns during planning of the projects as well as hardware or driver issues post-deployment.
Systems Patching Implementation–
Procured and deployed Shavlik Patch Manager as our automated patch scanner and patch deployment tool for the AFAS network. This product also performs software asset inventory, license use tracking, hardware model system configuration and user logs information gathering.
Server Systems Hardening Implementations–
Reviewed AFAS server farm. Implemented NSA, NIST and Microsoft systems hardening standards for our 2003 servers, IIS and SQL units.
Dual Redundant Firewall Implementation–
Replaced our Cisco PIX unit with 2 Symantec Gateway protection firewall boxes that performed rules based and stateful packet inspection. I was then responsible for adjusting rules for pass-thru, quarantine, input and output ports. Setup notification alerts to my desk. This product allowed IP blocking. Collected, verfied and then implemented a suitablely accurate IP list to block those nations we did not wish to have communications with such as North Korea, Communist China, Russia and regions such as Hong Kong or domains such as the Russian Business Network a known mafia, FSB controlled telephonic subnet with ties to spam, botnets and porn.
DNS would not bind resulting in Kerberos errors and DHCP homing errors in relation. Fixed.–
Live fire introduction to using Netstat and Netdiag, while an entire domain is down, to be fixed as soon as you walk into the office and hundreds of people have called your inbox ;>) including a general !!!
AD Domain 2000 to 2003 upgrade–
Inventoried Network and clients along with settings of domain, security scanned and patch level check scans of servers , backed up group policies, ran forestprep and domainprep, installed new parallel DNS server for 2003, prepared new server hardware for 2003 domain roles, transfer FSMO roles to new 2003 domain server, migrate 2000 server to windows new server 2003 using fsmt, performed DHCP Server Migration, ran domain controller diagnostics. Demoted old win 2000 server from domain controller role, then raised the domain level functionality to native Windows 2003.
Guest Network Implementation–
After new firewall hardware was successfully installed and configured, I was then able to implement a "guest" network fully partitioned IP segment in our organization to isolate guest laptops and protect our domain.
Implemented Microsoft MOM network systems monitoring–
Procured a server for MOM software. Installed said software. Deployed monitoring agents, set parameters and created dashboards to monitor various functions of my domain and client structure as well as SQL functioning.
"Live" dashboard network status monitoring, individually configurable by server with alerts.–
Implemented "real time" dashboard intrusion and systems monitoring in our environment. Tested various products to incorporate the disparate sources of info from our firewall, mail servers, app servers, spam filter for intrusion, disk space, utilization, alerts, temperature and other info into a live, individually configurable dashboard with alerts.
Web Content Filtering Implementation–
Surfcontrol Software installation and configuration in the DMZ. This product allowed IP blocking. Setup notification alerts to my desktop.
Security monitoring substantiation of company time abuse and objectionable website visitations–
Defense firm client seeking 3rd party opinion for union court case wherein employees were abusing the web and found to be spending 40% of the work day shopping and in personal chat/mail sessions. Upon audit downloads from objectionable websites were found as well. Transcripts taken, dossiers created for firm court use. Firm prevailed after my testimony.
Chasing down Event errors 1000, 1332 & DNS & Poweruser DCOM errors–
During this month, domain had thousands of logging and errors which actually bogged down the server communications. This had to be diagnosed and solved quickly. Found it was related to Microsoft updates with specific domain configurations. Due mapping loss in domain account and DCOM errors introduced from patch. Patch could not be backed out. Used CACLS to edit ACL and registry on PDC to replicate to BDC.
Vista Business Migration with Office 2007–
Prepared image using BDD2007 which included use of WAIK and ACT. Stored image on deployment server as well as a DVD. Performed a mixture of manual at desktop migrations with DVD and over the network wire installations of Vista Business. Went from XP to Vista so this was not an upgrade in place. Instead had to save user settings, preferences and profiles, then wipe client disk, and then perform Vista install with final step of restoring user custom settings and desktop preferences.
Secure Wireless LAN Implementation–
Changed the manufacturer password for wireless router, instituted and enabled WAP/WEP secure ID and encryption settings, enabled MAC filtering, turned off SSID broadcasting, disabled auto-connect, instituted static IP addresses for known equipment and client domain members, established separate subnet for guests.
Altiris Deployment and Backup Solution Implementation–
Installed Altiris domain monitoring, backup, patching and migration software packages.
WINS server update with associated WINS info replication/backup implementation–
Mixed mode environment was having some trouble with communications behind the firewall. After determining it was NOT any of the switches, hubs or associated communications tables (manual Hosts files or other auto techniques) decided to review the original WINS implementation from prior to my arrival and redo the segmenting, refresh the tables and manually cull or edit as needed for our environment. Throughput improved dramatically afterwards. Very successful implementation especially when tied in with the domain upgrade and review of FSMO roles the following year.
Symantec Anti-virus for Enterprise upgrade ver 8 to 11
Installed version 8 of Symantec Anti-virus for the Enterprise as a requirement for the "upgrade" version of 11. Built up the appropriate servers, made appropriate rules and block holes for access in firewall and desktop firewall settings. Deployed agents. Configured, deployed and then optimized operations and settings of product for various needs and various users while maintaining our security posture and keeping to standards.
Software License Metering , review and control–
A 30% cost savings was achieved by implementing software metering, to control our license use. A thorough initial review of the workstations and network was performed; followed by ongoing monitoring of issuance and usage to allow us to reduce active licenses, cull those not used and reduce waste or cost as well as avoid and fines or penalties from vendors. EULA for each product was read and contact with each vendor was established and then maintained.
2008 Domain and 2008 Servers Deployment–
Captured old server information via various tools - Nclookup, netdiag, sysinfo, perfmon, MOM, SCOM - and then moved to migrate said servers after capturing the system state via backup. Then upgraded BIOS as needed for RAID, NIC and backplane cards. Installed new 2008 OS onto server and installed apps as needed , moved data. Tested functionality of servers post-migration and coordinated satisfaction tests with associated customer department personnel.
Warm-Site Dynamic Disaster Recovery via periodic virtual refresh, a proof of concept–
Search for suitable warm-site location for recovery after disaster. Tested capture of periodic VXD machine snap-shots; transmit to DELL 9000 equipment and array in Richmond, VA.
Active Directory Global Catalog addition, FSMO roles transfer–
Mapped FSMO servers and separated by roles - schema master, then authorative time master, then DNS, then RID server were split off onto their own servers in our Active Directory forest. Secondary DNS server was setup and DNS replication with backup implemented. Global Catalog replication and backup was implemented in this month as well.
Windows 7 Image Creation, Testing and Limited Deployment–
Tested the MDT2007 first and preferred the use of the Altiris deployment tool.
Upgrade Surfcontrol Web and Mail Monitoring to Websense V10000–
After attending Websense training, upgraded our Surfcontrol software to an inline DMZ appliance from Websense called the V10000 unit. This also involved updating the formulas that had worked on Surfconrol to work in Websense as well as working with users to be sure their mail and data passed keyword analysis. Signed contract with Spamhaus for authorized use of their blacklist, Zen and Rokso lists as well. Primary effort at this point to block Chinese entry.
Deploy Enterprise Print Management via Group Policy 2008–
Installed Print Management module and options at the server and policy levels.
Outsource AFAS Domain to reduce costs.–
Worked cooperatively with hosting firm to move our domain and hardware resources to their NOC and cloud environment. Signed contract for project for my own end date and bonus plan.
Windows 7 Migration and Application Testing–
Used Microsoft Application Compatibility toolkit version 5.6.1 ( ACT ) within the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit ( MDT 2010) to analyze several hundred applications for use with the Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit and 64 bit client operating systems. Remediated applications, both custom in-house and COTS apps, via updating the said software to newer versions or creating shims as needed. Tested virtualizing apps and delivering them to desktop or running an XP sandbox in virtual machine mode as well as XP compatibility mode use.
USGCB settings, Windows 7 and Server 2008 via Group Policy
Windows 7 Group Policy analysis project for Federal Government client for work with the USGCB settings per NIST and NSA recommendations to make adjustments to settings such as Internet Zone security, power, and others for Windows 7 client rollout. Reviewed and gave opinion concerning settings for Windows apps and IE9 as well.
EMWD systems tuning effort–
After Attending NCR and IBM performance tuning courses at the company campuses of NCR and IBM, returned to my duties as Ops Manager and was able to tune our system and the associated jobs run stream for further efficiencies, better memory utilization and quicker job run times. The night shift had been running until 5am. After tuning we were able to eliminate the 3rd shift and sell further CPU time or shut off cooling and systems at midnight. System was tuned on a job by job basis with individual command and applets based upon job tracking in a database of my design with statistical formulas.
EMWD command language enhancement–
Automated nightly batch run using a language from NCR called "Systems Command Language" resulting in a 30% efficiency increase with consequent savings in labor hours, electric usage and cooling time. Also, CPU time was then available for sale to other facilities. SCL allowed automated checking of tape labels and volume disk pack numbers as well as mounting/unmounting with simple Yes or NO commands via the console to speed operations. I was also able to have conditional inputs for days of the week and monthly runs for EOM processing which was more laborious and slower prior to the introduction of SCL.
