Bjoern Lasse Herrmann's Experience
Founder & CEO
Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Computer Software industry
January 2012 – Present (2 years 9 months) San Francisco
Compass is Moneyball for the business world.
We empower business leaders to leverage the massive benefit of data driven decision making by providing the missing contextual data to their business performance metrics.
We are crowdsourcing business performance data with every business contributing data in exchange for getting access to a wealth of contextual information on their financial and operational metrics.
Compass.co is a dashboard providing realtime performance benchmarks on Marketing, Sales and Financial data pulled various APIs (Salesforce/Quickbooks/Google Analytics/etc.). The dashboard helps companies to identify problems, set objectives, allocate their resources and control results.
The technology is essentially a “data refinery” or an “analyst in the cloud”. The user puts low value data in and gets high value data back. We are among a new class of technology companies automating today’s slow and expensive business information services companies (e.g. D&B, ConferenceBoard, Gartner, Accenture, etc.)
Compass emerged out of Startup Genome, a research project I started with Stanford and Berkley examining reasons for business success and failure. The research is now part of the curriculum of hundreds of Universities.
Our goal is to accelerate the global pace of innovation and reduce the failure rate of businesses.

June 2009 – February 2011 (1 year 9 months) San Francisco Bay Area
Startup School was a side project I led while working on Supercool School. It is an open university for entrepreneurs from around the world. It is a virtual space to meet and learn live with like minded founders and experts.
The school had more than 2500 entrepreneurs as students. With contributors such as Mike Maples, Brad Feld, Jason Fried, Steve Jurventson, Marc Benioff, etc. I personally taught over 30 classes with more than 200 students.
After running for almost 2 years, I closed the school in February 2011 to focus on other things.
Privately Held; 1-10 employees; E-Learning industry
November 2008 – January 2011 (2 years 3 months) San Francisco Bay Area
This was my first funded Silicon Valley startup.
Our mission is to give people worldwide access to education. The best way to do that seemed to decentralize and democratize education by empowering passionate educators around the world.
Therefore we built a platform that allows everybody to create their own school online. Essentially we are doing for education what blogging has done for publishing.
Each school is a mix of ning and webex. We stripped the learning management component to the minimum and added the functionality to allow people to request classes as well. By doing this we built a simple way for people to build the curriculum collaboratively. Because of its social networking component each school becomes a powerful community that evolves organically over time.
The platform reached more than 2000 online schools and more than 60000 students. The platform is used by various ivy league universities, Fortune 50 companies and passionate individuals to educate the world.

We provided a mapping solution for employees to plan and prioritize employee career development and retention. Particularly for fast growing or shrinking organizations.
As a result of my organizational consulting I developed a simple desktop software for Companies and Universities to asses and track soft skills and customized performance indicators collaboratively inside a company.

Education for the Future
October 2006 – October 2008 (2 years 1 month) Mannheim Area, Germany
We organized events and consulted Universities and organizations on better education methods.
As a result of being very unsatisfied with my high school and university education I started an initiative for better education called "Education for the Future" (translated from German). It started with regular panels at my university and spread to various other Universities. We also facilitated change management inside Universities especially for new learning methodologies. As a result I was nominated into the National Expert Council for Education organized by the ZEIT magazine.

Guru (Freelance Consulting)
April 2007 – August 2008 (1 year 5 months) Mannheim Area, Germany
We helped companies mostly in the down or up scaling process to restructure their organization. Sometimes we would do similar procedures for companies that simply wanted to become more innovative. We also facilitated a few rebrandings of large consumer brands and led a couple innovation workshops. I had a team of two people and numerous freelancers depending on the demand.
Transparency for Development
April 2007 – December 2007 (9 months) Dhaka, Bangladesh
We helped local business in Bangladesh to accelerate - mostly by connecting them with distribution channels in Europe or by setting up online presences to attract western customers.
Throughout the project we received strong support from Bibi Russell (peace price laureate and founder of fashion for development) and Gaetano de Stasio. We were also supported by the Bangladeshi Government, Rotary and Rotaract.
We also did a deep research on financing, etiquette, management & entrepreneurship and connectivity. For the research we partnered with University of Mannheim, University of Cologne and the Moscow state linguistic University.
