Barbara Iverson's Summary

ChicagoTalks.org, the hyperlocal news site headquartered at Columbia College Chicago is my main project these days. I'm developing a hybrid online course where students will work for ChicagoTalks and have a chance to work at the forefront of journalism, where users and news professionals come together.

I also teach workshops and speak frequently about social media, social networking, and the convergence culture we live in. I'm interested in how the way we use media influences our preferences and content choices and what media we consume.

Before I taught Journalism, I taught interactive multimedia and made CDs before the WWW. In the dim past, I was a grade school teacher and institutional researcher. I often reflect on how I got where I am today, and think that my career path wa and early version of what people coming into the job market now will face.

Specialties

Community and citizen journalism, blogs, electronic collaboration a.k.a. social networking, social media, mobile media, open source and Creative Commons.

SPJ workshop presentation for journalists. I gave a talk with the mindomo presentation and included references. High points: Journalists already practice Fair Use, Facts can't be copyrighted, and political attack ads present copyright challenges for media organizations and journalists.
