I went off to college with every expectation to become the next Bob Woodward or Carl Bernstein, or the editor of a high-quality weekly newspaper. Romantic notions, both. After banging around the industry for 20 years, I found myself a newspaperman without a newspaper. I was both disgruntled and defrocked. I did, however, have a very popular local blog that I had started on a lark, but had quickly discovered affording me more freedom of the press than I ever enjoyed as a reporter/editor was working for someone else.
But blogging didn't pay well. So I'm been doing a lot of freelancing and working in jobs outside both mainstream media and citizen journalism.
There is nothing more that I would like to do it do make my group citizen journalism venture, The Blog Peoria Network (http://blogpeoria.com) profitable through advertising. I'm also exploring the idea of creating a not-for-profit version of the Website, and go after contributions and grants. If any reader has any ideas on this subject (or would like to buy an ad or help with a donation), then let me know.
