I am a pathological learner. From my earliest memories, my life has been marked by the pursuit of understanding.
All through my childhood I was constantly asking “How does that work?”, “What happens if we do this?”, “How does that fit together?”, “How can I apply this knowledge?” and much more. I remember at least once, to my mother’s chagrin, taking apart part of a refrigerator so that I could see how they were put together. I remember informally practicing the scientific method on my uncle’s farm as I observed the flow of a stream, made small changes to the environment after reflection, and then observed the effects of what I had done. I read much as a child – both fiction and non-fiction – and would often pass on knowledge to unsuspecting friends and family members.
This has certainly continued into adulthood. I continue to read widely – albeit mostly purported non-fiction. While there are some who would argue that non-fiction is just fiction that is not as creative as a novel, I tend to prefer it. And I continue to pursue understanding, connection, analysis, action, and communication.
These traits permeate my entire life – from my job as a Supply Chain Analyst to my functions within a local church. Every part of me seems to be driven to discover, apply, and share what I have found.

Who says you can't put an orchestra with a rock band?
In this volunteer position, I lead, direct, and play in a non-traditional volunteer orchestra. We play weekly along with a rock-based rhythm section and a choir. Talk about jumping into the fire to learn. Quick service management can teach effective leadership and decision-making skills if given the chance. But better than that, managers can learn about interpersonal relationships and leadership first-hand. While I was with McDonald's, I initiated positive changes in an opportunity-filled restaurant, interviewed and made hiring recommendations for potential employees, and trained new employees.

Many people say that a college degree is useless, reciting statistics about how many people actually get jobs within their major area of study. I disagree.
While I've never used my degree to teach in a formal school setting, I've found my education to be very valuable. I use what I've learned to lead a volunteer orchestra and play weekly. I've been able to apply my education and classroom discipline experience in other leadership positions. And because I understand how to learn, to think, and to teach, I've had many opportunities to learn, synthesize, and effectively share.
