My career begin as an intern for ARINC while working on my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, where I was first introduced to the data center and started working with servers, mainframes and networks. After successfully obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science I soon found myself as a field engineer, building Cisco networks all over the world. And after living out of a suitcase for months on end, waking up and trying to remember what city I was in and what language I needed to fumble my way through, I decided to take a role at BBN (which became GTE Internetworking, then Genuity, now Level3). And it was in this role where had the fortunate opportunity to help design massive, large scale networks that supported millions of users and spanned multiple continents.
In 2003, living in Los Angeles and with a recently acquired MBA in Technology Management, I decided to start an independent consulting practice. While working with my clients, I was continually tasked with solving complicated IT problems with little time and small budgets. It was under these pressures that I discovered the power of virtualization. I was able to differentiate myself from other IT consultants by delivering very real, solid, highly valuable solutions (like data center migrations and disaster recovery) while meeting tight budgets and timelines.
But in January of 2008, recently married and now living in Cincinnati, I decided that the lifestyle of a traveling consultant wasn’t something I wanted any longer. And given my background and the future I want for my family, I decided VMware was the place I wanted to be. It has been a wild ride since joining the company as a Sr. Systems Engineer in January, but I’m loving every minute of it.
