The University of Washington is pleased to receive American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) or federal stimulus funds. President Obama signed this extensive stimulus package on February 17, 2009, with the intent of injecting the funds into our economy as quickly as possible. The stimulus contains funding for science, engineering research and infrastructure, and limited funding for education, social sciences, and the arts.
The areas in which these opportunities may be available include School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, Health Sciences Administration, College of Engineering, Arts & Sciences, Ocean & Fishery Sciences, School of Law, and Office of Research.

School of Medicine was ranked as the 6th best in research by U.S. News and World Report, 2009.
Among programs newly ranked in 2009, academic specialties in the medical school that were ranked tenth or higher include: Family medicine (first for 18th year in a row), rural medicine (first for 18th year in a row), AIDS (fourth), women's health (fourth), geriatrics (sixth), pediatrics (sixth) and internal medicine (eighth).
The UW College of Engineering and School of Medicine's biomedical/bioengineering specialty was ranked fifth.
The Asian history program was ranked tenth. The sex and gender specialty in sociology was ranked fifth, and the sociology of population specialty was ranked eighth.
Three programs in the College of Education were ranked in the top ten: curriculum and instruction (ninth) and special education (ninth) and elementary education (tenth).
