Summary
I have returned to Geraldton, Western Australia after 4 years in Europe working as a researcher, consultant on sustainability strategy and cultural change, and coach for start-up social and community enterprises.
The focus of my work for the coming decade will be on integral, cross-sectoral, entrepreneurial approaches to building diversity and resilience in regional communities so they can move towards and beyond sustainability.

Responsible for leading the sustainability initiatives within the organisation, and across the community. I am part of the Environmental Health and Sustainability team - working to support health in the short-term (food safety, safe buildings, environmental hazards), medium-term (public health, health promotion and wellbeing) and long-term (sustainable development).
This work involves: engaging and empowering council, employees and citizens; sharing knowledge and information; creating management systems for setting and tracking progress towards targets; supporting cultural transformation and leadership development; working on priority projects and supporting other departments to meet their targets.
Priority areas of activity include: biodiversity, coastal management, zero carbon, zero waste, sustainable transport, sustainable built environment, climate adaptation, citizen engagement, wellbeing, sustainable water, local, sustainable food...

The internal projects include managing the intern program, building the tools and framework for internal knowledge management, and work on ecological and social sustainability. This work challenged my interpersonal and guiding skills to ensure clients enjoyed a very high quality experience. I adapted quickly to the new environment and was able to discuss the landscape and ecological issues with clients from disparate countries of origin.
- Assessed clients abilities and expectations; balanced this assessment with safety concerns and possible routes to deliver best experience for the client.
- Quickly learnt as much as possible about the vegetation, geology and history of a new landscape to deliver commentaries on extended trips (hours to days).
Masters , Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability , 2005 — 2006
- 1 yr Master's course including coursework and thesis research. The course was innovative, transofrmation and transcisciplinary - taking holistic, strategic view of sustainability using frameworks that provide a clear and compelling means understanding & applying other tools, concepts and ideas.
- Received top marks in all units taken: Introduction to strategic sustainable development, Strategic Management, & Advanced Societal Leadership. Further lead and participated in numerous peer-initiated sessions covering every aspect of sustainability.
- Thesis reserach has focused on the contribution that NGO-business partnership can make to transformational change towards sustainability. The Honours program built on academic skills and understanding of ecological systems established through my undergraduate studies, while deepening my knowledge of various intervention strategies aimed at changing behaviour. Completing the research and coursework demonstrated my excellent time management skills; ability to work independently; capacity for critical and analytical thinking; and empathic interviewing manner.
- My research investigated the impact of different information products, and the techniques used to distribute them, on environmental stewardship among land managers.
- Reviewed and critiqued previous research; and prepared a costed research proposal.
- Designed and implemented a program of original research and developed an innovative means of qualitative and quantitative data analysis and presentation.
- Produced a final Thesis and presented the research to academics, government agencies and research participants.
Bachelors , Marine Science , 1996 — 2001
This degree evolved from a broad base of science to a program focused on land and water management. The units in computer systems, mathematics and modeling were useful complements to the theoretical and field-based units. The coursework was undertaken across a number of specialist departments in a highly regarded university.
- 3rd year units inlcuded: Applied GIS (high distinction); advanced environmental management (distinction) coastal and fluvial geomorphology (distinction); field techniques in marine science; physical oceanography (distinction); land and water management; and applied statistical modeling.
