Ariella Furman, CEO of ALM Productions, has been directing and editing videos for over six years. She graduated summa cum laude from Temple University's Film Media Arts program in May of ‘08. During her time studying, Ariella took a keen interest in her new media courses, where Second Life was introduced to students. She found the virtual environment to be fascinating and free of boundaries. Having a passion in storytelling, she often marveled at the idea of a mashup video; a combination of Second Life video clips compiled together using conventional filmmaking techniques.
Always up for a challenge, Ariella created her first video in her Making Documentaries class. Her first attempt was miserable: holding a camera up to the screen. After doing some reseach, Ariella obtained the necessary tools and software to make machinima and created a successful ten-minute documentary about a female Amazon tribe in Second Life. Little did she know, Ariella was not only making a film, she had fallen knee-deep in an existing, yet underground industry. Before then, she completely underestimated machinima's significance to the world of gaming as well as filmmaking.
Her video was a hit within the class as well as a craze on the internet. It was posted in numerous blogs and she quickly befriended fellow machinimators and admirers of her work. From the beginning, Ariella felt the power of this new medium- the lack of constraints, the cost-effectiveness, the endless opportunities. From then on, Ariella started producing more machinima for both big corporations and independent contractors. She has since never looked back.
Ariella will answer to any of the following titles: Machinima maker, Machinimator, Machinimatographer, Machinimist, or Virtual Worlds Enthusiast. :)
