My current skills are a hybrid fusion of two sub-sets. Primarily, I am a scientist working at the interface between hard "science" and policy-making. Secondarily, I am a product of a country in political transition, with direct experience in the complexities associated with building trust in a highly polarized society by means of uncontested data and data-processing methodologies. I have fused these into what I call "Science in the Service of Society". My narrow technical focus is on the management of water as a strategic resource, specifically in water-constrained political economies. My niche is in transboundary waters where there is a need to shift negotiations away from water-sharing to benefit-sharing instead. At a broader level I work at the strategic level of management by "joining the dots" to help decision-makers in Government and Industry understand the changing environment in which they operate, with a view to unlocking maximum potential. I see change as a driver of opportunity, provided you can predict the direction and magnitude of that change, and it is here that I apply my core skills. I was the media spokesperson on water for the CSIR, where I tried to provide honest and accurate information on complex issues when asked by journalists. I believe that good science is never afraid of public scrutiny. I am also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria Water Institute (UPWI), where I support post-graduate training and applied research in the water sector as part of the CSIR commitment to the development of human capacity.
Strategic water resource management, water and economic development, water and social stability, water as a driver of peace, post conflict reconstruction, policy options for water-stressed states, management challenges that arise when water crosses any political jurisdictional borders, development of strategies for the sharing of benefits arising from transboundary water systems, governance in the water sector, management of mine water including acid mine drainage and decant
