VP & GM at Unisys
Greater Philadelphia Area
I am a vision & strategy guy with a very strong entrepreneurial bent. I have been in the computer, consulting services, and systems integration business for a little over 20 years and have accomplished some pretty cool things. Although my formal education was around engineering and I started out as an architect & designer, I found that I had a natural affinity for sales, marketing, and business development, and especially for creating and running successful businesses. I also greatly enjoy leveraging technology to solve compelling business problems.
I grew a software & services startup business from scratch to over $600m revenue in two years, and was named as one of the “top business leaders who matter the most in 2008” by LinuxWorld magazine. Additionally, I was one of the original inventors and subsequently ran the program to develop the world’s first Intel mainframe (ES7000). The ES7000 is now in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest number of concurrent gamers. I also conceived of and designed several mainframes which subsequently generated billions of dollars (literally) in total revenue. I have eight patents around computer design and architecture.
I serve on multiple non-profit boards, and I especially enjoy activities where I am serving the community supporting underprivileged folks. And, I love to write and do public speaking gigs.

I built this open source software & services business at Unisys … everything from the original business plan through to the engineering, marketing, channel development, training, sales, delivery, and support. In one year, we far exceeded our revenue targets, established Unisys as the largest Systems Integrator in the Open Source space, and were noted by InfoWorld as “Open Source’s biggest services gun.”

I was one of the inventors of the ES7000 before I took over running this business. The ES7000 was the world’s first Intel mainframe and holds several number one records for performance and price per performance. The ES7000 is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest number of concurrent CounterStrike gamers at the Dreamhack gaming conference. I proudly display that plaque on my wall.
It was also in this role that I had some incredible mentors and learned how to be a truly effective leader. I was (and still am) a big proponent of Emotional Intelligence, and leveraged those skills to build some really good organizations. Year over year, my teams held the lowest attrition numbers (for top rated employees) and the highest professional satisfaction ratings.

June 1988 — November 2000 (12 years 6 months)
This is where I started my career. I began designing computers, mainframe computers that is. I found that job to be intellectually stimulating, but it (the job) was too far removed from the market and the customers. I had the honor and privilege of inventing, designing, and architecting several of Unisys’ best-selling mainframes. During my computer design years, I amassed eight patents around design and architecture. And, I once solved an extremely perplexing (and costly) mainframe problem by combing my hair. If you want to get to know me, ask me about that story.
BS, Electrical Engineering, 1984 — 1988
One of the best engineering schools, and one I'm very glad I attended. The co-op program is amazing ... I think every school should offer it.
Senior project: Along with partner Dan McMennamin (one of the smartest guys I've ever met), designed and prototyped an optical character recognition system utilizing Digital Signal Processing (DSP) transformation techniques. We also tried unsuccessfully to build a business around this idea. We certainly learned a lot, and it was a ton of fun.
