After seven years of reporting border security issues from Tijuana for The San Diego Union-Tribune, I started a master's program at the University of Southern California with a specialization in creating and managing online communities I have yet to decide how or if I will blend these two interests of mine: The border and evolving communications industries. But I will update this profile periodically to reflect my changing focus.

Studying the creation and management of online communities through this USC master's program that provides both theoretical and practical experience. The program provides an overview of social media marketing concepts, explores legal questions posed by online communities, introduces business models for startups, and delves into the sociological implications of online communication trends. The capstone project involves working with fellow students to develop an original online community using traditional industry standards. This involves creating a scope document, outlining design site flows and wireframes, developing an extensive PRD, and working with designers and developers to complete the final product with a three month period. Expected date of graduation is 2010.

Heavy emphasis on public security issues along the border, such as the impact of drug trafficking, kidnapping rings and people smuggling organizations on Mexican civil society. Job required an ability to adapt to different cultural standards, speak Spanish, and operate under particularly challenging conditions due to lack of public information available in Mexico. Responsibilities included developing investigative and analysis pieces on border issues as well as being able to report breaking news stories swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines.

January 1996 — December 1996 (1 year )
Won a competitive grant from this Miami-based journalism group to study abroad and do freelance work in Latin America. My focus was on the evolution of post-war societies in El Salvador and Nicaragua, in particular how these countries were adapting to democratic models after years of bitter civil wars that had torn apart families and communities. I explored this through the sub-themes of women's rights, land issues, and the presidential elections in Nicaragua that year.
