Lead Software Development Engineer at Microsoft
London, United Kingdom
I started life at Multimap as the first front-end developer in the Product Development team. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to grow that specialism up to a team of 9, working in offices in London and Istanbul. We worked on Multimap's JavaScript mapping API, multimap.com, maps.yell.com and a wide range of clients from Sony and Ford, to lastminute.com and The Royal Mail.
On acquisition by Microsoft I was appointed Lead Developer (with a team of 6) for Microsoft's consumer mapping products in the UK (multimap.com and maps.live.com).
Outside of Multimap/Microsoft I have contributed to numerous industry publications both on and off-line, most notably feature articles for Computer Arts Projects Magazine, .net Magazine and Sitepoint.com. I write regularly at my website/blog usabletype.com, which is required reading for web development and interface design courses across the world, and have guest lectured at the Arts Institute of Atlanta.
Experienced web application developer and architect. Core skills include front-end standards based development, Object Oriented Javscript Programming, DOM Scripting, Web accessibility, client-side performance optimisation, user experience/interface design. Also professional experience with PHP, Perl, Python/Django, MySQL/Postgres/Sqlite, and Apache/Lighttpd/Nginx Web Servers.

As lead front-end engineer at Multimap.com I managed a team of professional front-end engineers that delivered highly complex and rich standards-based web interfaces for many Multimap and Microsoft clients. The team was also responsible for the front-end components of Multimap's core products, including the JavaScript mapping API, and the high traffic Multimap.com website (10 million users).
I grew the front-end team at Multimap from a one man team of myself to a team of 9 in offices across London, Istanbul and Sydney, establishing front-end engineering as a specialised discipline within Multimap.
