  • Head of Production

    TechnoPhobia

    (Privately Held; Internet industry)

    April 2008December 2009 (1 year 9 months)

I led and expanded the production department from 20 to 40, building up 4 strong teams:

    > User experience design team

    > Software development team specialising in Java, Ruby, .Net, PHP and Flash

    > QA team focusing on test automation and a collaborative continuous integration process with the development team

    > IT and Hosting team deploying and supporting Linux and Windows environments

I worked with the senior management team to define the department's strategy and objectives and with team leads to deliver those objectives. I led the communication of this strategy across the business through workshops, Food for Thought sessions and internal blogs.

I also acted as a bridge between the production department and the client services department (consisting of project and account management) and as head of production resourcing.

  • Senior Developer

    TechnoPhobia

    (Privately Held; Internet industry)

    May 2007April 2008 (1 year )

As senior software developer, I specialised in architecting, building and leading a development team in the production of Ruby on Rails web applications. The largest build was the Becta Self-Review Framework builder, a complex application builder that enabled Becta to build the Self-Review Framework (http://selfreview.becta.org.uk) that is now used by 80% (and growing) of UK schools to self assess their use of ICT. The application was built following both BDD and RESTful methodologies.

    Becta gave the following feedback:

"the new tool adds further real value to the self-review framework. The user-centred design presents a tool that is much more usable than its predecessor and will contribute enormously in supporting schools with their developing ICT strategies. A big thank you to all on your team who have made this project such a pleasure to work on"

I also provided consultancy in software development process and best practice.

  • Lead Developer

    LINE Communications

    (Privately Held; E-Learning industry)

    December 2006May 2007 (6 months)

As lead developer, I led a number of eLearning and application development projects for a number of clients, including the 3C Training Performance Pound ROI tool (http://www.3ctraining.co.uk/performance-pound.html) and various projects for Ufi LearnDirect. I also managed an external supplier, led feedback sessions with clients and provided guidance and direction to Line in supplier management, project management and agile delivery.

  • Development Manager

    PlusNet

    (Public Company; Internet industry)

    April 2006December 2006 (9 months)

As development manager, i led a team of 30 developers (Java and PHP) on some very challenging projects and i think and hope that i gained the support and trust of everyone who worked with me. The role primarily focused on driving quality into the system and development processes and driving the business analysis and solution design teams toward for solution focused and streamlined documentation.

The projects that the team were delivering focused around PlusNet's customer management and self-service system, that consisted of a PHP frontend to a mix of Java and PHP business logic. The system was complex in that it handled every aspect of the customer service experience from phone and adsl provisioning, fault management, account payment, and ticket submission and management. The system interfaced with many external interfaces such as BT's adsl provisioning system.

Some project successes from all the roles at PlusNet include:

    > Successfully delivered an urgent and business critical project to reduce software application bugs from 400 to 75 in 5 weeks, 4 weeks ahead of schedule with a team of 10 developers.

    > Successfully led a team of PHP and Java developers in the integration of Tiscali ADSL provisioning system into the existing PlusNet infrastructure, saving PlusNet significant ADSL provisioning costs.

    > Successfully technically led a team of PHP developers alongside a team of Java developers to integrate BT’s automated Fault Diagnostic and Fault system into the PlusNet web-based customer management system, saving on average 10 customer support FTEs.

    > Successfully led teams of software developers, QA engineers, BA’s, network engineers, sponsors (senior management) and external suppliers on other large and small projects.

    > Streamlined the development process and introduced UML and an MVC development framework proposal to reduce costs and work duplication.

  • Project Manager

    PlusNet

    (Public Company; Internet industry)

    August 2005April 2006 (9 months)

As project manager, I worked within the Business Automation team, delivering business benefit through the delivery of cost cutting application and hardware solutions that reduced overheads via the automation and management of customers' ADSL service.

    I was responsible for:

    > Leading teams of software developers, QA engineers, business analyst’s, network engineers, sponsors (senior management) and external suppliers through the development of large and small projects

    > Sanity checking all aspects of the project, from project briefs, business requirements, technical specifications and QA test plans.

    > Aiding lead developers in the technical design of software solutions.

The most notable and challenging project that i led was the complex PlusNet BT Faults automation system. The system provides customers with a browser view into the state of their BT line and tools to interact with PlusNet and also directly with BT. The system was architected with a PHP front end and a Java asynchronous message queue backend into the BT Faults system.

My role on this project changed over time, as I was initially one of the first members of the team involved in solution definition and technical design of the PHP frontend aspects of the system. During this work, i clarified to the business that in fact the project needed further user experience input and analysis. When the project came back into the delivery team after further analysis had occured, i was then in the role of project manager and led the build phase from the design through to completion of Phase 1.

  • Lead Developer

    PlusNet

    (Public Company; Internet industry)

    January 2005August 2005 (8 months)

For my first year at PlusNet, I worked as lead developer, responsible for the technical design, architecture and build of a number of web applications. I was also responsible for leading a team of PHP developers, alongside a lead Java developer, Business Analyst and Project Manager.

    My key responsibilities included:

    > Technically designing software solutions that met business requirements and provided a sound technical solution.

    > Documenting software solutions using UML, wireframes, and database schemas to clarify and communicate design strategies.

    > Leading the development of projects, including writing code, guiding a team of PHP developers and interacting and communicating across the business.

    > Reengineering the development methodology to support the scaleable requirements of the company and proposing a PHP MVC development framework.

  • Courseware Technology Manager

    Ufi Learndirect

    (Government Agency; E-Learning industry)

    January 2003December 2004 (2 years )

At Ufi, I technically manage over 50 external eLearning software development agencies in the production of eLearning software applications for Ufi and their clients including Barclays.

    My responsibilities included:

    > Defining and maintaining the Ufi courseware technical standards, supplier requirements and sign-off process and documentation. All developers that work with Ufi must adhere to these standards and processes. At the time, Ufi worked with about 50 of the leading eLearning agencies and they had about 1000 online courses up to 45 hours long. These specifications, standards and processes ensured that delivered courseware worked effectively across Ufi’s wide range of end user client PC environments and integrated seamlessly into the Ufi Learning System Environment.

    > Technical quality assurance of courseware before development began and advising where designs need strengthening.

    > Providing technical development support to all external suppliers and internal project managers throughout the software development process. This was in the form of written guidance and standards documentation, regular supplier and internal meetings and conference calls, an interactive web forum where questions were answered and FAQs built, and an internal information and documentation portal (that I built and implemented).

    > Reviewing trends in industry technical standards and analyzing adoption strategies for Ufi. These included SCORM 2004, IMS, and Telcert. These helped Ufi plan future direction and LSE and courseware development.

    > Technically reviewed the Ufi LSE environment and wrote up areas for improvement. This highlighted areas requiring significant improvement and gave Ufi the direction and detail they needed to implement API code changes.

    > In-sourcing the technical development support department from an external supplier, cutting a £10k a month contract by completely reworking the courseware development process

  • Application Design and Development Manager

    Seranova

(Public Company; Information Technology and Services industry)

    November 2000February 2002 (1 year 4 months)

At SeraNova, I led and created interactive work for global clients including Audi, VW, Citibank, American Express, Argos, and Alstom Transport. I also implemented a European interactive design and development working process for use in all projects incorporating interactive design. This ensured highest quality design, usability and technical implementation.

When times got tough during the period of eBust, i was forced to try my hand at sales. During this time, i recommended and drove a strategy to move the business into a new business area of interactive 3D production for the web (using Cult3D - http://www.cult3d.com/)

  • Web Designer

    i2i Solutions

    (Computer Software industry)

    April 2000November 2000 (8 months)

At i2i Solutions, I was a senior designer and developer working on interactive design projects for SME’s including design and build of the original advanse.co.uk job recruitment portal, design specs for Media Week International, and numerous e-commerce design solutions.

During this time, i found my interest (through desperation) in effective client and project management methodologies. After 6 months, i left to join SeraNova to learn and benefit from SeraNova's clear experience and expertise in delivery management.

Andy Goundry’s Education

  • Danube SCRUM Master Certification

    SCRUM Master Certification 20092009

I attended the SCRUM Master course and certification.

The course and certification helped by providing a framework and language that structured a lot of my previously gained experience and knowledge. It also provided a clear and simple language that has helped communicate the roles, artifacts and processes of an agile project to a whole project team.

  • Coventry University

MA by Research , Design and Digital Media , 19992001

    Activities and Societies:
I was driven to take on this research project after delivering my first interactive web 3D project at the end of my undergraduate degree. I had developed an interest in finding out if learning activities that, in the real world, take place in a 3D environment, could be more easily taught and consumed if taught through an interactive virtual 3D medium. I involved Haynes (http://www.haynes.co.uk/) along for the discovery, built a prototype and conducted user studies. The results were interesting.
