Andrew Spong’s Summary

About Andrew Spong:

Andrew Spong is an 11 year medical publishing specialist with a career record of high-level strategic influencing and tactical collaboration. He has been a developer of business models delivering first-to-market, first-in-class digital and print products from leading brands and properties.

With experience of having led multiple teams across EU locations, Andrew Spong possesses a truly cross-continental perspective, having lived and worked in both the EU and USA. He enjoys strong networking relationships across the publishing, pharmaceutical and B2B sectors.

Since his return from New York, NY in June 2008, Andrew Spong has been exploring the potential of social media to support, augment and enhance the activities of scientific, technical, and medical (STM) communities. He shares what he finds via STweM.com and its affiliated social media presences, and also by means of specialist STM consultancy services.

About STweM:

We work with STM literature.
We use social media.
We STweM.

STweM (http://stwem.com) helps scientific, technical and medical (STM) communities affect change through the use of social media in order to better serve the literature that they variously register, validate, publish and redistribute.

STweM offers consultancy services to STM communities (professional societies, industry communicators, pharma marketers, publishers etc.) in order to help them understand the ways in which these social media can assist them in achieving their aims and objectives, as well as select, develop, implement and maintain a portfolio of web presences that meets their requirements.

STweM helps STM communities assess the ways in which they conduct their enterprise and the business models that they use with the aim of refining, augmenting, and enhancing their activities on an ongoing basis.

Andrew Spong’s Specialties:

I am committed to promoting the effective use of social media in STM publishing.

I advocate that all parties involved in the STM publication process must perpetually reassess, and where necessary redeploy and realign, not only the methods of scholarly publication they currently utilize but also the business models that support them. In so doing, they will ensure that scholarly literature is served to the communities of purpose that constitute its readership in the most effective manner.

Andrew Spong’s Experience

  • Consultant

    STweM (Sole Proprietorship)

    (Sole Proprietorship; Publishing industry)

    June 2009Present (6 months)

In May 2009, I was afforded the opportunity I had been looking for to launch a consultancy:

STweM: social media for STM communities.

My objective is to help societies, STM (scientific, technical & medical) communicators, and publishers both understand and act upon the benefits that the effective use of social media can bring to their respective enterprises.

I look forward to working with you in order to help make it happen.

  • Director, Business Development

    John Wiley and Sons

    (Public Company; Publishing industry)

    March 2008May 2009 (1 year 3 months)

I led the Corporate Sales EMEA teams in Oxford (medical books), Chichester and Berlin (clinical communications) and Copenhagen (medical peer-reviewed journal supplements), whilst retaining a personal interest in developing the profile of Wiley-Blackwell's evidence-based medicine properties and brands.

In this role, I expedited the integration of Wiley-Blackwell's gold-standard STM content into the platforms used by today's - and tomorrow's - generation of STM professionals and consumers by:

    - Using social media effectively
    - Seamlessly incorporating content into the end-user's workflow
    - Driving content through novel digital channels
    - Experimenting with business models
    - Collaborating with platform-building and niche content-repackaging specialists
    - Connecting with customers' segmented, difficult-to-reach target markets and adding value to their interaction by means of the effective redistribution of Wiley-Blackwell content
    - Facilitating the consolidation, collaboration, and convergence of global content-enabled initiatives as both an internal benefit and external differentiator.

  • Business Development Director, Global Books & Evidence-Based Medicine

    John Wiley and Sons

    (Public Company; Publishing industry)

    March 2007February 2008 (1 year )

I had global responsibility for the sale in all formats (including partnerships and licensing) of the book and evidence-based medicine lists of Wiley-Blackwell, Wiley's scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly business, into corporate channels.

  • Regional Manager, EMEA, Healthcare Solutions

    John Wiley and Sons

    (Public Company; Publishing industry)

    October 2003March 2007 (3 years 6 months)

I established and subsequently led Wiley's Healthcare Solutions division in EMEA. The group served the following services to the pharmaceutical industry and its affiliate enterprises into all European marketplaces:

    - Repurposed and/or translated custom-published book, journal, major reference work and evidence-based medicine materials as paper reprints, e-prints, handheld e-deliverables and bespoke digital artifacts
    - Publication planning support
    - Pipeline peer-reviewed content in support of commercial websites and pharma-sponsored community of interest websites.
