Andrea Vaccari is Research Associate at the Senseable City Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studies the integration of information and communication technologies in the built environment, and their application to the social dynamics that drive city life itself. Andrea obtained a BSc degree in Computer Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, two joint MSc degrees in Computer Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, and a Diploma in Advanced Studies of Innovation Processes and Contexts at Alta Scuola Politecnica. He is currently completing a MSc + PhD in computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Throughout initiatives like WikiCity, New York Talk Exchange, New York City Waterfalls, World's Eyes, and Obama | One People, Andrea leverages the huge volume of real time geotagged data provided by digital devices and sensor networks to better understand cities as real-time control systems, and to provide new tools to innovate and anticipate the effects of such innovations. Andrea is currently working on CurrentCity, a new initiative that aims at analyzing and visualizing aggregate information on cell phone activity to identify abnormal events and assist public authorities and first responders.
