European enterprises need to compete effectively in the global marketplace. The ELAN study, carried out for the European Commission during 2006 by CILT (the UK National Centre for Languages) suggests that there is enormous potential for businesses in Europe to increase their total exports if they invest more in languages and develop coherent language strategies. One of Commissioner Orban's objectives is to explore the concrete contribution that multilingualism can make to growth and jobs.
As part of that strategy he is setting up a Forum with a view to engaging in a structured dialogue and partnership with European business. The Business Forum will gather a small group of European managers. Its aim will be to identify how companies can make operational use of language management when seeking to maximise their economic performance. The work should lead to a set of recommendations for the EU' policies in this field.
The group will be chaired by Viscount Etienne Davignon.
