Dr. Allen D. Hunter’s Summary

Dr. Allen Hunter, received his BS in Honors Chemistry, 1981, and his PhD, 1985, in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of British Columbia. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Australian National University and the University of Alberta before joining the UofA as an Assistant Professor in 1987. In 1992 he joined YSU as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 1998. He has done extended research leaves at the University of Pittsburgh's Crystallography Department and at the University of St. Andrews and Australian National University Chemistry Departments. His research training was in advanced instrumental methods and synthetic inorganic/organometallic chemistry. His active research interests include: science education methods; nanoscale inorganic/organic materials (including molecular wires and metal-organic framework compounds); advanced instrumental/analytical methods (including NMR, diffraction, & hybrid methods and metrology); and cybertechnology (including cyberinstrumentation and cybertechnology software ware development). He has received over seven million dollars in external grants for this work and has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications while graduating over a dozen MS and two PhD students. He was the founder of what is now the YSU STEM Analytical Instrumentation Facility in 1994, was the founding president of the STaRBURSTT CyberInstrumentation Consortium, was elected to the Continuing Education Committee of the American Crystallographic Education, and is involved with regional economic development organizations such as NorTech, the Youngstown Business Incubator, and the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative. He is deeply involved in collaborations with regional and national companies, including playing key roles in commercial projects such as the design new generations of advanced instrumentation, new software products, and new manufactured products and services, including founding a start-up technology company.

Dr. Allen D. Hunter’s Specialties:

He requires that all of his research students have at least part of their thesis be co-directed by an industrial partner to meet a specific business challenge/opportunity. He is the PI and Director of the DoD (Army) Centers of Excellence in CyberTechnology and Advanced Metrology which bring together university, industry, and external R&D groups to simultaneously carry out cutting edge R&D, served the needs of the DoD and the national defense industrial base, and regional economic growth.

Dr. Allen D. Hunter’s Experience

  • Director of the YSU Node

    STaRBURSTT CyberInstrumentation Consortium

    (Higher Education industry)

    January 2005Present (4 years 11 months)

The Science Teaching and Research Brings Undergraduate Research Strengths Through Technology, STaRBURSTT, consortium grew organically out of pre-existing regional instrumentation consortia. Its goals are directed towards systematically and significantly changing the research and educational cultures at Predominately Undergraduate Institutions, PUIs, with the value added benefits flowing from this change to our customers (the nation's major research universities and R&D and production organizations) through the currency of our students. The project has a series of interlinked and naturally synergetic components that will facilitate a major and simultaneous increase in the depth of undergraduate research and educational experiences.

  • YSU Principal Investigator

    CyberLabNet Project Team

    (Research industry)

    January 2005Present (4 years 11 months)

Lead YSU collaborator on the University-Industry team developing new tools to enable cybertechnology applications (especially remote control) for non-expert users.
