President at Knoxville Overground
Knoxville, Tennessee Area
I currently am working full-time helping to develop Knoxville Overground and seeing it through to its official 501(c)3 non-profit status. We currently operate the only coworking workspace and entrepreneur community center in Knoxville, TN.
I also work part-time as a consultant and on a per-contract basis in web development, market research, public relations, social media, and business development for startups in Web sector and cleantech industry.
In my spare time, I am also currently in the process of interviewing candidates for my book, "Altrupreneurs."
My experience varies from journalism (former magazine editor and collegiate newspaper columnist), graphic design (for an advertising agency), residential property management, interior design, environmental canvassing and lobbying (Iowa Citizen Action Network), public relations (Division of Interdisciplinary Programs at The University of Iowa), small business accounting (DeWitt Electric in Iowa City, IA), human resources assistant manager overseeing 130 employees (Manpower, Inc.), etc.

Knoxville Overground (KO) is both a member and sponsor supported nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Tennessee (501(c)3 status pending) that:
1) manages a community center and coworking workspace where self-employed professionals, entrepreneurs, and telecommuting employees can learn, socialize, collaborate, and work,
2) validates and accelerates volunteer-powered endeavors that attract and retain the “creative class” and prospective investment funds in Knoxville, and
3) fills a niche as an independent advocacy group to promote socially-responsible economic development initiatives and sensible public policy for high-growth startups, micro-enterprise development, and self-employed professionals.

"Altrupreneurs" is a book I've been working on using an open-source development philosophy that incorporates strategies on how people can apply the same principles used in startup companies to Fortune 500 corporations in their own lives for peak performance and creating financial freedom. The other half includes interviews with Altrupreneurs under 40 who define financial freedom not by their net worth or lifestyle but instead by the amount of free time they have to focus on personal development, public interest, consumer advocacy, environmentalism, sustainability, teaching, arts & the humanities, and other social endeavors.
