I was hired to develop, integrate, improve and consolidate solutions based on Free and/or Open Source software. My first assignment was to deploy a SourceForge-like site, and to work a product out of it, something we could sell to our customers. That was a bit tricky, since the project had recently moved from MySQL to PostgreSQL and the documentation had yet to be updated. However, as I was working on that, I got re-assigned to help a sinking J2EE development project. In that project I coded a database access layer, similar in concept with the modern DAO.

LSI is a research lab inside the largest andmore important Engineering school in the country. I started as an intern in Parallel Computing development, but soon I became System Administrator for the project I was working in. In 1996 I got my first root account on a server, an old SunOS 4 machine, where my first task was to compile gcc (yup, the compiler). After that I became Admin for many other environments, including IRIX, Linx, Solaris and some AIX. When I left the lab I was on of the main administrators there, being responsible for all IRIX environments, and sharing with others the responsibility of taking care of the entire network of the lab, with more than 200 users.
