Alef Arendsen’s Summary
In 2002, Joost van de Wijgerd and me set out on a journey to become leaders in the Enterprise Open Source Java world. Together we started JTeam, a company building great software, taking utmost care of its customers and telling the world about it.
I was part of the first group of engineers developing Spring, now the de-facto standard Enterprise Java development platform. Spring is used by many Fortune1000 companies such as HSBC, JP Morgan Chase, Toyota, KLM and LinkedIn to implement mission-critical systems.
In 2004, I co-founded SpringSource. Together with Steven Schuurman, I set up the continental-European branch of SpringSource which involved hiring some our key engineering and sales staff, rolling out our professional services program and overseeing day-to-day operations.
Taking a break from management, between 2006 and late 2008 I traveled the world to tell the community at large about the software we build, the values we share and the idea of community innovation in general. I spoke at numerous conferences and trained key engineering personnel how to successfully use our technologies.
Several rounds of financing and three acquisitions later, it felt like SpringSource had become what I envisaged 7 years ago: a leader in Enterprise Open Source Java. I left SpringSource last March to take a bit of a break.
Currently, I serve as an advisor to JTeam and I am looking at other opportunities.
In my free time, I travel a lot, spend my time in the mountains in Italy or out at sea on my kiteboard.
