As a young lad Al delivered newspapers to the home of the then Mayor of Rice Lake, WI. As he did he would think to himself: "Someday I'll have your job!"
"Some people just feel destined to do something, or be someone. That was how I felt about being Mayor of my hometown. I just knew at a very early age that I would eventually be Mayor. I didn't know why. To be perfectly honest, at that age, I didn't know for sure what a Mayor even did. But, I was going to be Mayor. There was no doubt about that."
So, while most boys were dreaming about being a sports hero, or just beginning to discover girls, here was Al, believing he was destined to become a Mayor.
Al is extremely proud of the fact that he is the only non-National Honor Society member who has ever been chosen to deliver his high school's graduation speech!
After four years of college, followed by three years of living the big city life, Al moved back to his hometown, his growing interest in local politics coinciding with that move. Within a couple of years, he was doing editorial cartoons for the local newspaper.
Then, without any other political experience, Al ran for Mayor. A three-term incumbent was his target. When asked why he ran at that time, Al responded, "I didn't like the guy," and, "it was time." Al won.
Presently, Al is Local Government Affairs Director for the Realtors® Association of Northwestern Wisconsin. It is his responsibility to personally keep informed on the issues of local government in a six-county area of northwest Wisconsin. He then determines if an issue might be of interest to the local Realtors®, and the property owners and homeowners they represent.
All this local government experience resulted in the book Moving Mountains and Molehills Local Politics 101. A self help book on how to Fight City Hall.
