Company Director at the Manchester Jazz Festival and Project Manager at UKOLN
Manchester, United Kingdom
I am a Company Director for the annual Manchester Jazz Festival. I make regular appearances on the Manchester jazz circuit having played and jammed with many of the local musicians including Mike Walker, Andy Schofield, Iain Dixon (Bryan Ferry), Richard Iles, Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra), Chip Wickham (Badly Drawn Boy), Gavin Barras, Ed Kainyek, and Les Chisnall. I am currently being mentored by local jazz guitar legend Mike Walker and have also been taught by Andy Schofield, Alec Dankworth and Tim Richards.
I also blog about jazz (http://theringmodulator.blogspot.com), write reviews for Jazzwise magazine, and host a radio show on Manchester’s ALL FM 96.9 radio station.
I also work as part of the Research and Development team at UKOLN, a Centre of Excellence in web and digital information technology research. I am currently project managing the JISC funded SWORD2 project and working on distributed search and repository technologies.
I previously worked for the Learning Technology Services Team which is part of Internet Services at the University of Manchester. I was responsible for investigating and assessing emerging web and e-learning technologies and I was the founder and organiser of the University's eLearning Technologies Group.
I also worked for MIMAS, a national data centre based at the University of Manchester, on the JISC-funded JORUM project (2002-2005). Prior to this I was a Web Developer for Multimedia Services at Leeds Metropolitan University (2001-2002) and the Web Editor at King's College London (2000-2001). I first studied Economics and later Continental Philosophy at the University of Warwick. Following this I became a professional guitarist in a number of bands based in London, as well as a Sound Engineer for a number of independent artists including My Bloody Valentine.
