Senior IT resource providing scalable solutions for demanding environments. Over 10 years of direct experience in highly available mission critical environments. I work quickly to isolate problems and deliver solutions while able to see and respond to the big picture. Able to assess infrastructure and make recommendations for immediate improvement and deliver concise long term technology direction.
Survived the “Slashdot Effect”, not just once but three times on completely different architectures for both my own website, Netera and AbeBooks!

Backstage is a leader in highly addictive online games with their Pulltabs and Scratch & Win Applications. Facing scalability and stability issues Backstage enlisted my help to bring them to the next level in their IT infrastructure. I quickly resolved the performance and scalability challenges of their applications and rebuilt core infrastructure to ensure they have a platform to grow from - using 100% FOSS. Backstage faces unique challenges; accelerated growth of new applications is common and they need to be able to provide resources at a moments notice. Using cloud computing technologies and OpenSolaris they are now able to provision new application servers quickly and cost effectively.

Netera provides the resources for researchers in Alberta to be competitive globally. These include project management, supercomputing resources and network infrastructure. I was responsible for the continued support and development of our data center; as the senior systems administrator I was the lead role in all server operations and guided all technical decisions. We provided resources and tools to researchers using a wide array of network services using Apache, Tomcat, Sendmail, Majordomo, BIND, and MySQL/PostgreSQL on a variety of platforms. These include Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris and Mac OS X Server. Network security is provided with host based firewalls (IPFW, ipfilter and Sunscreen) and Osiris host monitoring. I was also responsible for the operation of our videoconferencing facilities using H323 on Polycom products (MGC and VS4000) and Access Grid technologies. I managed technologies across four data centers.

At Alberta Financial Services I was responsible for the server infrastructure of AFSC. This was a one-month contract to continue smooth operations while the existing administrator was on leave and to implement network security. The infrastructure consisted of Solaris, AIX and Windows 2000 Hosts. Databases were provided with Oracle and Sybase products. My primary task was to secure their server infrastructure using best practices, firewalls and host monitoring solutions. Using Checkpoint NG and Tripwire I implemented a thorough monitoring system to ensure data was protected. Snort was used to provide intrusion detection warnings.

Perceptive IT Solutions was my private consulting business. My team of three provided IT system and process audits. We also provided UNIX system support to international clients primarily for ISP solutions and network security. Focusing on Solaris and FreeBSD we built infrastructures for high availability web servers, email, news and DNS. Apache, Sendmail, Qmail, Postfix, BIND and MySQL were some of the most widely used solutions. Technical support and training were provided to existing staff. The scope of work done for our clients is large and diverse including Oil/Gas, ISP’s and ecommerce.
