As the Senior System Administrator & Systems Architect at AbeBooks I was the technical operations team lead and Senior IT Technologist for the company. Responsible for the continued availability of our ecommerce website I was also responsible for developing technical architecture decisions and leading the operations team. Utilizing best of breed technologies with Java, Oracle RAC, JMS, Distributed Caching, Clustering, Tomcat, Open Source, Virtualization, Linux and Solaris we are able to provide 99.99% availability of our platform. As the lead of a team of five I trained and supported my team while ensuring all objectives and availability requirements were met. Utilizing my extensive IT experience and adaptable knowledge I was able to bring the company to 99.99% availability from 98% - all during my first six months with AbeBooks. We operated two data centers across two provinces totaling over 180 servers running Linux and 105 virtual machines. AbeBooks was bound by PCI DSS compliance.

At Netera I was the senior technology specialist driving technology decisions to support researchers across Alberta. The lead of a team of three we provided project management, supercomputing resources and network infrastructure. I was responsible for the continued support and development of our data centers; as the senior systems administrator I was the lead role in all server operations and guided all technical decisions. The ongoing design and support of several data centers and video conferencing facilities across Alberta’s universities’. We provided resources and tools to researchers using a wide array of network services. A peer with CAnet we were instrumental in the design and launch of WestGrid; Canada’s supercomputing infrastructure across Alberta and British Columbia.

At Alberta Financial Services I was responsible for the server infrastructure of AFSC. This was a one-month contract to continue smooth operations while the existing administrator was on leave and to implement network security. The infrastructure consisted of Solaris, AIX and Windows 2000 Hosts. Databases were provided with Oracle and Sybase products. My primary task was to secure their server infrastructure using best practices, firewalls and host monitoring solutions. Using Checkpoint NG and Tripwire I implemented a thorough monitoring system to ensure data was protected. Snort was used to provide intrusion detection warnings.

Suite Systems was a licensed CLEC providing Digital TV, Internet and VOIP services to its customers. I was the lead Senior UNIX Administrator of a team of three and was responsible for all aspects of the UNIX infrastructure relating to internal development, Internet services, digital TV services and VOIP. We designed, built and maintained the IT infrastructure to support our services to the highest levels of availability. Responsible for all network services and development of new technologies. Including high bandwidth client connections, multicast streaming video and ISP services. A diverse technology offering due to the wide range of customer products. Design of infrastructures to support tens of thousands of end user devices (set top boxes.) High volume SMTP, transparent firewalls, transparent distributed caching and content delivery. Management of over 100 servers on various platforms, primarily Linux and Solaris using SNMP and configuration management methodologies. Programming in C and Perl for network applications. The company shutdown and ceased operations in Nov. 2001.
