I have spent 20 years since graduate school -- and a couple of years as a co-op student and summer hire -- doing industrial research and development. I have tried to be a bridge between my friends and colleagues in the academic world and my companies' product divisions. The greatest work satisfaction I get is when I can use some new algorithm -- or apply some old algorithm in a new way -- to dramatically improve an existing product or enable a new one. Being able to explain to my kids that the reason that one rewritable DVD format works better than another one is because the good one uses Dad's patented algorithm is pretty much the R&D trifecta.
